Hair All about wigs!!!

Omg I’ve failed my fellow wiggy enthusiasts! I forgot to take a picture with the hair fully visible, cascading down the front! These will have to do! I went out today in this outfit and I have never, ever received so many compliments about my hair before in my life! Everyone kept telling me they loved my hair and could I please tell them how I got it that colour and what shade I ask my hairdresser for. My response was always: It’s a wig from AliExpress. There’s no way I could grow and maintain this much hair.

My other wigs are being held hostage on someone’s post truck. I hope I get them soon!!! It’s annoying when they pick up the parcel from the depot and don’t deliver it because someone else might have!

@mellowyellowgirl as I am procrastinating starting my day (and workout which right now am not in the mood lol) look what just showed up on my feed....30 (!!!!!) years ago today...I cannot believe how fast time goes. You don't think about it when you are young but when you are older (my age) you really start thinking about your mortality. I mean 30 years passed in what feels like an instant

This is how I wore my hair in my 20s. This photo is exactly 30 years ago from today

Screen Shot 2025-06-29 at 6.44.14 AM.png

This photo is how I wore my hair later. I let it go natural. I didn't realize I even had curly hair til much later..I had no clue and how I found out is a longish story so will save it for another time if you are interested. But I thought my hair was straight before I realized it was not. My mom loves to tell the story how when I was younger (a kid) she couldn't make my hair curl even with curlers it was so stick straight. So it definitely changed from straight to curly. Crazy right?

This photo is from approximately 10 years ago I think

Screen Shot 2025-06-29 at 6.46.20 AM.png

And lastly, this is the very first salon wig I tried on and I did not purchase this one as it cost over 5K...I mean that is cray cray
This was at Shuly wigs and I did end up purchasing a dark blonde wig as my very first human hair purchase. I over paid (still less than the brunette wig) but it was a good lesson in wigs and they did spend 4 hours with me that day and I greatly appreciated their time and their help. It is great to actually go to a salon and try wigs on to get an idea and they even cut the wig on me

Wig I did not purchase but was tempted
I find bangs much easier than no bangs in terms of looking realistic

Screen Shot 2025-06-29 at 6.49.39 AM.png

The one I bought but never wear unfortunately. I do not find it comfortable. It is not a medical wig and I realized I need medical wigs

firsthumanhairwigshuly.png

OK that was my trip through memory lane and now I am off to work out then go cycling. Have a great day XO

i think i need to take more notice of what you girls are talking about
a few months back when i had the disgusting carbunkle i had to cut my hair, im thinking in a year it might be nice again
what stops them flying off in the wind?
what stops them itching ?
can you wear a cap over it and can you tuck the wig hair up under the cap ?

Ugh I'm sorry you had to deal with that..it sounds painful Nicky
So to answer your questons

1. what stops them flying off in the wind?
Some use a wig grip to keep it from moving and it really works
Most important is get a wig that fits well
I occasionally wear wig grips but often I do not because mine fit well
Greg alters them if necessary. He is multi talented lol He can alter my clothes and wigs :)

Screen Shot 2025-06-30 at 6.01.02 AM.png

2. what stops them itching ?
I wear only medical cap wigs because my scalp is sensitive. I have sensory issues. So look for one with a medical cap like these

Screen Shot 2025-06-30 at 6.05.33 AM.png

3. can you wear a cap over it and can you tuck the wig hair up under the cap ?
You can but better to buy a hat wig for those purposes if possible because every time there is friction on the wig it wears away at the life of the wig. A well taken care of wig can last for years

Here is an example of the inside of a hat wig. I wear for errands and it is super comfy
I remove all combs as they are too irritating for my sensitive scalp

Hope Gary is doing much better with each day and he gets to come home to you soon Nicky

Do blondes have more fun?
;)

Oh squeeee did you wear it out??? You look fabulous as a blonde!!!

I love your dress @missy!!!

My wigs have been delivered!!!

Some good stuff and some slightly weird stuff but I’m happy!

Let’s start off with the slightly weird!

So this looks NOTHING like the listing but AliExpress can be random and I do enjoy the colour. I wore it grocery shopping right away so I can’t say I don’t like it! It looked more natural by the time I went out because I brushed it and fluffed it up.

IMG_0827.jpegIMG_0860.jpeg

The good. This was actually pretty good and by the time I was running around with it, it looked much more natural. I tend to take pics for my PS wiggy friends before the wig has a chance to settle in. I really like this one.

IMG_0828.jpegIMG_0867.jpeg

This was the best! I prefer the blonde wig because the heart wants what it wants but objectively this looked the best. You can never tell with these wigs because this looks the most natural in real life but looked fakest out of all 3 in the listings.

IMG_0892.jpeg

The wig I’m longing for has been released but it’s $26 and I’m feeling oddly cheap so I’m waiting for a sale

I love your dress @missy!!!

Aww thanks. I got a sweet deal on it..it's Lily Pulitzer and when the salesperson saw me walk in she exclaimed I have a gorgeous dress for you and it will fit you beautifully. She was right but if I gain an ounce it won't fit lol

My wigs have been delivered!!!

LOVE them on you Mellow. You look amazing in everything, you really do!!!

Hahaha you go girl. Who doesn't love a good sale!!! And you made all those pieces work. They all look beautiful on you

Oh squeeee did you wear it out??? You look fabulous as a blonde!!!

LOL No I never have. This is the blondest I feel I can go in public
In my heart and head I am a brunette what can I say...my bio hair is almost black so this is a huge step towards blonde for me :)
I find I look better in cooler/ashier tones but have pieces all over the color/tone spectrum and I think I can get away with it. But I definitely prefer cooler colors on me. The blonde in the post above is a cool blonde and this is a cool brunette/blonde in the photo below

mckennaiwig.png

Hope you end up getting that piece on sale..fingers crossed for you Mellow

They all look great on you @mellowyellowgirl. Which one is your favorite?

I love the blonde!!! But when I wear blonde I feel like it needs to be a full on “look” if that makes sense. As in I need the whole crazy anime cosplay effect. I haven’t been brave to wear just it out with jeans although hubby says I look great in it with jeans (I met him down the street in the blonde wig the day it arrived).

I wear this one the most. OK it’s silly but because it’s the wiggiest, it’s low value to me so I wear it grocery shopping etc and it ends up getting the most wear. Here I am popping out for a banh mi.

IMG_0916.jpeg

Do you have a pic of you in your new wig Callie? Would love to see you in it if you’re comfortable posting!

@missy

Re your dress: I tread a very fine line with the AliExpress dresses. I always buy the largest size because Chinese sizes are tiny and even then I have to plot about which one I’m going to wear, because some of them are just not conducive to eating and I love a good multi course meal!

Wear the blonde wig!!!!!! You look sensational in it!!!!! Do it!!!!!!

I have a Japanese bbq buffet tomorrow! What wig to wear!!! It’s smokey as heck so I’m thinking of one of my non favourites but it’s a date with hubby so I want to look pretty! I’m so torn!!!!! Definitely not an AliExpress dress though! Good ol Aussie generous sized dresses for tomorrow!

@mellowyellowgirl, I’ve been trying to decide if I should send it back and have more hair added to it. The company I bought it from said to send it back and they would add more hair. Life has been busy so I haven’t gotten around to deciding what I want to do. Do you have a hair density that you think is perfect or that you feel most comfortable in?

What color does your husband like the best?

Ooh sounds like fun Mellow!
Here is some info regarding smoke and wigs
Just in case
And remember test any solution on a hidden area first to make sure no color issues happen

The above is for synthetic hair
For human hair (not that different than synthetic hair for removing smells etc)
Try airing out
Dissolve a few teaspoons of baking soda in a basin of cold water and soak the wig for 20-40 minutes.
Or dilute apple cider vinegar in warm water and soak the wig
You can also try misting with a diluted solution of water and white vinegar to neutralize odors.
Then washing in a sulfate free gentle shampoo

I think you should wear whatever makes you feel good and enjoy this lovely date with your husband :kiss2:
I love the blonde!!! But when I wear blonde I feel like it needs to be a full on “look” if that makes sense

Aww thanks. And yes, I totally get what you mean
Blonde needs makeup and the full makeover so to speak
I never wear makeup for the most part
If I am going to something I want to look pretty for I might wear eyeliner and maybe some eye shadow and lip gloss
But you are right. Blonde looks best with more rather than less
Appreciate your kind compliment thank you

wear this one the most. OK it’s silly but because it’s the wiggiest, it’s low value to me so I wear it grocery shopping etc and it ends up getting the most wear.

I think this one looks terrific on you Mellow. I love it. I don't think it looks wiggy and the color is amazing on you with your skin tone :kiss2:
and the green sweater looks perfect with it

Let me know which wig you decide to wear for the Japanese BBQ buffet...and have fun!!!

This is the alternative hair I wore yesterday afternoon to run errands after we got back from cycling.
It was literally 98 degrees and HUMID
My hair looked perfect or as the kitties say...purrrrfect

I watch Wigs with Steph on YouTube (I find her charming) and she often talks about how wigs look more wiggy if they are too thick for what a person could realistically grow on their own head. She recommends 130 or 150 for herself and maximum 180 for most people.

That said I looooooove a thick, lush head of hair. I don’t particularly care for thinner hair. That’s my bio hair and why would I bother with wigs if I want to walk around with thinner, realistic hair. My wigs are also all cheapies with no lace front so I don’t think they give two hoots about density. You get what you get for $15 and make it work

The 3 wigs that I don’t like and applied to return were all on the thinner side though so I’m personally a lover of thick, lush hair that I’ve never had in my life (even in my 20s).

Hubby loves the blonde and redhead wigs. So does my sister and bestie. What I find super interesting is that all the introverted, quiet, conservative people in my life really enjoy me in the crazy, outlandish wigs whereas the extroverted, out there folks prefer me in “true hair” wigs. I probably prefer the various shades of blonde the most. It feels more fun and spicy! But I must wear a red wig when I’m in green because I want to channel Anne of Green Gables. I will not wear green with any other colour wig.

You know how I blocked my face in the picture above? This is the manga version of that picture that hubby generated from ChatGPT :lol-2:

@missy how are you finding the wigs in warmer weather? Aussie summers are no joke so I’m already thinking about that. I cannot, will not give up my wig wearing so I need to make it work!!!

Ooh thanks for the odour tips! Hehe might bite the bullet and wear a blonde one!

I can’t remember if I mentioned this but I bought my $26 wig!!! With all my couponing I got it for about $22. And I bought another blonde one! I’ll wait until I receive them so I can post the ad and my real pic for you folks!

OMG I’ve written so many reviews on AliExpress I must look like a bot cuz in many of the reviews I’ve got the same outfit but a different shirt on! Totally looks like suspicious bot paid reviews!

I find wearing headband wigs or hat wigs are the most heat friendly way to wear alternative hair. I get warm easily and I feel great with these types of alternative hair. Plus I personally find human hair wigs to be cooler for me to wear

Woohoo, score!!! Yes, cannot wait to see them on you mellow!

So I think I told you I started out with synthetic first then moved to HH. But here are my first two synthetic wigs. I never wore them out of the house because IMO, on me, they looked fake. And honestly the quality wasn't there. The lower quality wigs tangle like crazy. But I had fun as I was just starting to learn about wigs and what colors I preferred on me

I can't believe I am sharing these photos lol

This first one is called a cosplay wig and was very inexpensive
Maybe like $20 IIRC
I actually loved this color so much

Screen Shot 2025-07-02 at 6.38.02 AM.png

This second one is a step up in synthetics but still not a quality wig compared to my HH wigs
But I liked the sweeping bangs and length

missysyntheticwig2.png

I am glad you are having fun with alternative hair...IMO that is the point. To enjoy changing styles and to feel good about yourself. I find the aspect I like the best is I can just throw on my hair in a few seconds and look good.

@mellowyellowgirl, Thank you so much for the Wigs by Steph suggestion. The hair on most of your wigs looks like human hair. Do they look this natural in person?

My human hair wig looks great immediately after it’s been styled but two hours later it goes flat and the waves fall out. I probably should send it back and have them add more hair so it looks thicker. Like you, I want pretty, full of body hair. The kind I’ve never had a day in my entire life. LOL

Yes! I would say the hair itself looks really good. The straight hair is sleek and reminds me of my friend’s hair when she used to get those straight perms. It is glossy and smooth without that plastic shiny. The wigs with curls are not shiny at all. So I give them top marks for the actual synthetic hair quality. Where they look “wiggy” is the fact that they are all hard fronts, no lace, no hand tied, no bleached knots etc. I don’t know which of Steph’s videos you’ve seen but she talks about plucking the hair line to make it look realistic and matching your lace etc. I do none of that and just slap the fake scalp wig on.

Steph mentions that you have to style human hair wigs all the time. I’m just parroting Steph because all my wigs are heat friendly synthetic so they stay exactly the way they are styled by the manufacturer. If you don’t like a certain way a strand of hair falls or need more volume or need to flatten something, you just shove a hairdryer at it and the heat sets it into the shape you want. It’s fascinating because you can brush out the curls and then they reset back to their original curl bunches. When I do that with my bio hair (after I put it in rollers) the curls just frizz.

This morning I decided to move a part line (the most effort I’ve expended). Took me two minutes to hold it in place with a rat tail comb and set it with a hotish hair dryer.

Does your wig have ear tabs (I have them and Steph is a huge fan of them) and would you consider a synthetic as well to add to your collection? Do you wear a wig grip?

I’m a bit weird in that although I adore wigs, I can’t see myself spending too much on them. Like undies. In my youth I used to buy undies for $1 then with inflation they are now up to $3 a pair but I’ve never bought all the fancy good stuff. I’m not sure why! I think I’m the same with wigs. Very content with the $15-$25 stuff. I think if I were to do whole lace thing (I tried briefly and failed) I’d have to really learn it and I’m so deep into the $15 wig journey, for the most part I can get them to work out nicely.

@missy the first pic of your synthetic is the colour I started out with on my wig journey!!!

They look great on you!!!

I wore my lion wig to my buffet. It is airing out at home right now as I type! I don’t think it smells bad. Debating whether to spray it…..

Ok so for the first time I can kinda understand the self conscious thing! I’m due for a day out with Lil Sis, walk in some flower gardens (we love it) but I need to drop my ring off to have a stone put back in (bloody paves) first. Now I was going to go full blonde with my sister but I am kinda on acquaintance level with the jewellers and I’m not sure if I have the gumption to walk in with a full on fake blonde wig. I mean realistically even if they think it’s weird, I will be on my way after I fix my ring and no one is going to care in the long run but I do feel kinda weird…………

Ladies help me

I want this

Hubby thinks it’s ugly cuz of the clump of curls at the bottom

Thoughts?

Was thinking I could put it in low pig tails in summer…..

I think the style is pretty but is the color orangey? That would be my only hesitation. Also, even with no heat synthetics you can put whatever tool you are using on low heat for a short period of time and change the style a bit if you do not care for the curls at the end. I sort of like the look though. It's just the color I am not sure about and that is one of the most challenging aspects of alternative hair. It does not always show its true colors online pics and of course hair color changes in different environments. That is, to me, one of the most challenging aspects when choosing alternative hair

Thank you @missy !!!! I’m going to get it! I was only worried about the style as I have bought enough hair from this vendor to predict the colour. You’ve given me more confidence about the actual style!

@mellowyellowgirl I found the first synthetic wig website I ever ordered from...these are cosplay wigs and do not look super realistic IMO but they have fun wigs. If you sign up they give you 10% off your first order FYI

Yes, it's a very pretty style!

I went to my brother and SIL's place yesterday, and my SIL had a little box of synthetic wigs from my (deceased) aunt. LOL! I couldn't imagine her wearing these, because she was never adventuresome with clothes, makeup, hair, etc.

We tried them on and there was everything from a long blond (and oh-so-hideous) one, to a short blond one; a short caramel highlighted brunette one; a multi-gray one (also short), and a dark curly one as well as a couple pieces that attach with combs.

No photos, but we had SO much fun trying them on and wearing them around for a bit. I couldn't wear them for very long as they made my head itch! Just having my own hair pressed against my head, perhaps? Or perhaps because they were old technology? Or maybe I had a psychological "moment" because they are really old, and secondhand? LOL!

I can see where having different hair looks could be fun!

Love that you had fun with this Sparklie. That is how I started. I bought inexpensive synthetic wigs to just get used to them and never actually wore any of them out. It took me a long time to get comfortable with wearing them. If you are interested in wearing them consider medical cap wigs. They are much more comfy and not itchy. I have sensory issues and can wear my medical cap wigs no issues at all. It is a lot of fun mixing it up and wearing different colors and styles and lengths. I am enjoying it so much now whereas initially I just never thought I'd be able to comfortably wear them.

@mellowyellowgirl any new wigs arrived yet? Yesterday I wore a piece I bought last November but never wore out. It came with bangs. And it is a medical cap wig. I really love it. Very lightweight and comfy and the color is great. I thought it looked very natural.

madison.png

On an unrelated note this dress I am wearing is my favorite summer dress. I should have gotten a full length photo. The medical tech who worked me up yesterday couldn't stop going on about how beautiful this dress is. I gave her the info where she could buy it and she was so happy. I love fashion and I love dresses and that is one great thing about the hot weather. My summer dresses. Anyway I digress.
