I would like to know what I can expect to pay for a good quality .5 to 1 carat stone of alexandrite and a 1 to 1.5 carat stone of kyanite. The alexandrite is for a birthday gift and the kyanite is for my own enjoyment.
Alex... about 2-3k/carat.
However, the size of the stones will likely be less than a diamond's of the same weight. Top color is hard to find in small gems of any sort because there's simply not enough depth to hold it, hence some price jump above 1 carat. I am not sure what the critical weight (for pricing) is for alexandrite. Perhaps 2 carats or so. For the respective quote I had in mind something as nice as this only smaller. I would not be surprised if you find prices way higher than this though, even for very small alexandrite.
Kyanite... a dime a dozen, if you can find one at all !
The nice ones are usually quite large:
(five carat Kyanite - about $100/ct.)
No "guru" here, just hope the hint helps
Not sure how could color and overall quality be presented in a post better than with refference to some piece listed, hence the links. I have no way to know how tru to nature these are (although I trust both shops). However, what I see on my computer screen does correspond to my understanding of fine quality in either gem kind, for what that matters.
