I was wondering what made this stone AGS1...
depth 59.6
table 58
crown angle 34.7
pav. angle 40.8

and this stone is AGS0

depth 59.9
table 57
crown angle 34.6
pav. angle 40.7

What is the difference?

Are polish and sym the same for both?

Both have mb flour. first stone thin-med and second has thin-med faceted.

Interesting... GG, have you seen these stones?

And the certs? On the AGS-1, where was the "1" (rather than a "0")?

On an ideal cut depth should be 59.9 - 63

table should be 53 - 57.5

so the first stone missed out a bit on both these.

Lynn, not I have not seen them. I was wondering why the difference. I mean the specs are just a bit different from each other.

Pyramid, is that why it makes it a AGS1 instead of a 0? Would there be a huge visual difference in either stone?

I believe that is the measurements that are making the difference. I don't know what the visual difference would be. One of the experts will know though.

One clarification Pyramid: The above is true if the diamonds were graded using the old AGS system. As you indicated, proportions outside certain ranges (table% for example) were disqualified automatically. This is no longer the case.

In the new AGS system (since 2005) it's possible they would both be 0, because there are no flat constraints on proportions. The diamond is scanned and ray-traced. If it earns high enough values for brightness, dispersion, contrast and leakage it gets the 0 grade in light performance. It is a stricter system, since diamonds at the outer limit of the old system no longer qualify, but it also allows prior configurations outside the old range to earn 0/Ideal if the diamond performs at a high enough level.

Gothgrrl, can you let us know if they were graded using the old system or new? If it's under the old system there may be little, or no difference visually. If it received 1 under the new system it may be due to factors other than the proportions you gave (minor facet configs, brillianteering, etc).

Here are details.

For anyone interested in a technical overview, here is a link to a webinar discussion where the differences are outlined.

John, both were graded Oct. 2005.
In that case it could mean either system: AGS allowed manufacturers to continue having rounds graded using the old system until very recently (to give the industry time to adapt). Many switched to the new system right away but others did not.

Do you have links to the reports?

Old DQD looks like this.
New DQD looks like this.

I usually like a smaller table than 58%...sometimes this impacts performance, sometimes they look great.
