Can you please solve a lover''s quarel on whether or not the AGS is as reliable as the GIA? I am very interested in the Dream Stone (today at least, it seems to change daily), and it is AGS certified. He seems to think that GIA is the ONLY way to go. Please help.
AGS and GIA are reliable, AGS stones tend to be a little more expensive because they attract a cut premium - you never see diamonds with way off proportions submitted to AGS because they publish the proportions.
But that does not mean you can not find unusual proportioned beautiful diamond with GIA.
If price is an issue then you can save money buying an EGL USA graded stone, which will also be conservatively graded - but avoid stones that do not have USA emblazoned on the document because EGL Israel and Belguim are very soft certs.
THANK YOU so much for answering my AGS vs GIA question. It really helped. I've been reading the forum for about 3 weeks now, and I have copied and posted many of yours' and others' helpful answers into a Word document. It's pretty big now, but this was needed to quell his fears about other labs. Thank you.
There is no reason to do this other than to feel good about it
, but geez that Dream is so expensive, I expect that the seller *should* be happy to obtain a GIA report for the stone for you at no charge if it results in a sale. The cost is probably only a hundred or two on a stone they're probably making several thousand on. (Now that's a nice piece of work isn't it?)
