Consider the ''dittos'' and the ''+1s'' to be the print version of a conversational head nod, or a grunt of agreement. If you were sitting at a table with eight other people, and one asked a question which was answered by one of the ''pros'' present, would you expect everyone else to stare ahead in silence even if they agreed with the pro''s response?

I imagine that real professionals who are confident and know what they are doing don''t find a ''ditto'' from a lowly consumer to be annoying.

If they do find it irritating, I hope they know they are free to leave at any time, or in the very least, to skim past the offending posts.

With all the annoying things one can encounter on public forums, I truly cannot fathom how "ditto" or "+1" posts can make anyone's I-feel-the-need-to-complain-about-this-publicly list.

They serve a valid purpose, which is more than can be said about many other posting styles.

While I see your point about experts not needing to be backed up (in most cases), I found it reassuring as a newbie when there were a lot of people in agreement. There is safety in numbers!

When I ask a question to a group of people, I am looking for a general consensus answer. So I find +1 posts very helpful, because by the time you get to +7, you have the majority vote right there - job done. Actually more useful than 20 people paraphrasing the same thing.

And you know, some people just say things pretty darn well.

People come here for handholding through a big scary financial purchase - "The more the merrier" in weighing in on advice increases consumer confidence.

If you come and post once or twice and don''t realy know who the big guns in the community are, a strong public consensus is your next best option.

I don''t know. I wasn''t referring to any if there are. I was referring to topics/posts that don''t seem to have a real reason for being. Questions that no one really cares about, and the answers aren''t really the point. They exist as tally marks on the spreadsheet of ''how many posts can I rack up''. You''ve seen ''em. This smells like one - - to me.
