When I was 13, they introduced the first hand-held calculator. Dear God, I''m old.
In science class in grade 10 we used slide rules, only the richest kids had calculators and I don''t remember if they were allowed to use them. I cheated on the exam as I wrote all the formulas on my case
11.gif
. They may take away my masters degree since I don''t really have my grade 10 science

When I was 13, the Space Shuttle Challenger exploded - I was in Science class watching it on TV.
Jennifer, you must also be 1972? I was also 13 when that happened...I was in 8th grade.

OK, I have no idea what dippity do is...hmmm....

1995 was the year that Amazon.com started up on the interwebs. I remember the Million Man March and the Unabomber in the headlines that year. Fashion was icky - those were the grunge years. I recall having about a half dozen oversized plaid flannel shirts in my closet (stolen from Daddy!) to wear with my clunky platform shoes.

Hmmm, hopefully I''m not blending my summers (and if I did, you have to forgive me, since as you can see I am getting on in years

) - JAWS, Rocky, Saturday Night Live debuted, Bonne Bell, LipSmackers, Loves Baby Soft perfume, John Travolta, Leif Garrett, the Starland Vocal Band "Afternoon Delight" - worst song ever - Happy Days, the Doobie Brothers, mood rings, pet rocks, Barry Manilow, Charlies Angels, Bicentennial everything . . . and I think my parents had a baby blue metallic Gremlin in the driveway.

When I was 13 and studying our Solar System in middle school, Pluto was still considered a planet.

...and it always will be in my book.

When I was 13, Smashing Pumpkins was one of my favorite bands. I also wore Airwalks...awesome.

When I was 13,

The Hustle was the rage.

Saturday Night Fever and Grease were the movies of the day.

Space Invaders was invented.

The average cost for a gallon of gas was 63 cents; a first-class postage stamp was 13 cents.

You had to wait in line to get gasoline.

The first Susan B. Anthony dollar was made.

The first test tube baby was born.

Jim Jones'' cult committed mass suicide in Guyana.

Popular TV shows included Quincy, Charlie''s Angels, Happy Days, Laverne & Shirley, Love Boat and Fantasy Island.

MJ''s album "Off The Wall" is released

Pope John Paul I assumes the papacy but dies 33 days into his reign. Pope John Paul II then becomes the Pope.

Music was still released in vinyl albums and 45s. 45s cost $.99, which was the same price as an ice cream sundae at Woolworth''s.

Johnny Carson was the host of the Tonight Show. There was no such thing as 24-hour news; in fact, TV itself wasn''t broadcast 24 hours. When the evening programming went off the air, the test pattern (color bars) and the annoying tone went up until programming resumed the next morning.

There was no such thing as MTV. Windows operating system didn''t exist.

When I was 13, my dad bought me the must-have CD for one of my sleepovers - Spice Girls!, the Oklahoma City Federal Building was bombed, my friends and I were trying to figure out how to let our parents watch all the R-rated Brad Pitt movies (A River Runs Through It, Legends of the Fall, Seven), and speaking of Brad, he was dating Gwenyth Paltrow, and wide-leg jeans with baby doll tees and jellies were what I wore to the junior high dance (where we danced to the Macarena).

Only rich people had color tv. Girls set their hair with "spoolies". The Beatles were hot. No pantyhose in our neck of the woods-we wore garter belts and sanitary napkin belts.

This was one of the top 100 Bill board hits:

Judy In Disguise (With Glasses), John Fred and His Playboy Band

And all this time, I thought it was ''Judy in the Skies''
25.gif

Robert Kenedy Jr. and Martin Luther King were shot.
JUDY IN DISGUISE???? since when? It''s always been Judy in the Skies, hasn''t it??

(geez, what else didn''t I get right?)

LS
Nope. Judy in Disguise was kind of a joke directed at Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds. Subject matter was different, but it prompted the title.

And woo-hoo! There''s somebody else older than me!
9.gif
I''m feeling much less antiquated now. Thank you.

You would have been quite high falutin' at $40K! My dad, with a Master's Degree in Education, was making about $16K.

Ha! Looking back, I see DF agrees with me to the dollar!

When I was 13 gas was 32 cents/gallon, Twister had just been invented, and AstroTurf was showing up on every neighborhood patio

.

No self respecting trendy girl would be caught dead without her white vinyl go-go boots.

PP, I think you were born the same year as my mom and dad! 1953?
Yep. 1953, I just had my birthday on April 29th

Ask your mom if she ever got sent home for wearing too short of a skirt? We used to roll our skirts up at the waistband to make them shorter (scandalous huh?)

When I was 13...
Everyone was, "Livin'' la Vida Loca" , and talking about the hot "new" singer named Brittany and her hit "Baby one more time".
Talking about how Y2K was the end of the world, and all the computers were going to shut down.
Schools became scary, my neighborhood was next to Columbine.

Shel Silverstein passed away and it was impossible to get a copy of "Where the Sidewalk Ends" from the library.
"The Sixth Sense" came out and the phrase "I see dead people" became a hit, and who could forget the "Titanic" craze (I''m the King of the World anyone?), every talent show in school had at least five girls singing my heart will go on and dating got a lot more "soul-matey" (if you were allowed to date yet), unless you where a boy and then you were watching Matrix and claiming you should have picked the blue pill.
The Blair Witch Project was "the scariest movie ever!" and you weren''t cool unless you knew that the Phantom Menance was a "pre-quel".
The "CW" was still the WB with the dancing frog, Felicity, Roswell, Dawson, Charmed, Buffy, and Angel.
Poloroid cameras could now spit out instint sticky picktures that you could put on your locker or yearbook.
Ebay was new and you could finally get the Ty bear beanie baby you were searching for, with parents permission of course, did you see the new episode of Pokemon? oh and don''t forget to feed your NeoPet a slice of egg or he''ll die!

When I was 13 (in 1998) Brandy and Monica''s "The Boy Is Mine" was the jam. Mark McGuire and Sammy Sosa were doing that little home run thing.

Did you guys wear X-Works and Eclipse jeans or was that just an Irish thing? That was all I would wear when I was 13 and I felt to trendy in them!

When I was 13, young Leo DiCaprio was a heartthrob, and every girl my age had seen Romeo and Juliet multiple times in the theater!

I used to tape songs off of the radio during the top 8 at 8 to make myself mixed tapes that I would walk around and play in my awesome walkman that had a cassette player.
