When I was 13, we didn''t have cable TV (lines still dont reach there) and the only satellite dish available was the huge that went in the yard. The computer we had only did DOS and there was no internet. Well, I guess there was internet, it just wasn''t widely available or known. We did have call waiting for our home phone, but no cell phones at all.

When I was 13, the one phone in the house was the black rotary dial WALL MOUNTED phone in the kitchen. Very short cord so we had to stay in the room to talk to anyone.....

When I was 13, when I went to the corner store for Maxi Pads, the store lady brought them down from the tallest shelf. They were wrapped in plain brown paper.

When I was 13 and studying our Solar System in middle school, Pluto was still considered a planet.
...and it always will be in my book.

What would the ''p'' stand for in: My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Nine Pizzas ?

I agree, I can''t stop thinking of Pluto as a planet.

When I was 13, handouts at school were made from bluish/purple ink on ditto machines that worked by spinning around to spit out the paper. Big inky mess and always smeared!

When I was 13...

Princess Diana, Gianni Versace, Michael Hutchence, and Notorious B.I.G. died, everyone had Titanic mania, Ellen Degeneres came out of the closet, R. Kelly believed he could fly, we had dial-up internet (stupid AOL!), the cool kids had pagers (I wasn''t a cool kid, haha), and everyone wore the old Tommy Hilfiger flag logo t-shirts.

When I was 13, I remember everyone was talking about "Who shot JR

"

When I was 13 the equal rights amendment was passed. We had to wear dresses to school. Nixon was President. You could buy a sapphire from the country of Ceylon. Mark Spitz (dreamy) won 7 gold medals. We had recently bought a color TV. Our phone was rotary. HBO was invented.(But who would PAY for TV?) The 1st hand held calculator was invented, but at $325.00 we did math in our heads. The VW beetle was the most popular car. The digital watch was invented. And most importantly of all, Atari PONG was invented.

When I was 13 gas was 32 cents/gallon, Twister had just been invented, and AstroTurf was showing up on every neighborhood patio

We could just change it to: My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Naan.

Trying to get a little more culturally broad, while we're at it

My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Noodles
My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Nectarines
My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Nachos

When I was 13, the Space Shuttle Challenger exploded - I was in Science class watching it on TV.

When I was 13:

It was all Iran-Contra, all the time
I wore frosty pink lipstick and blue mascara
Moonlighting and thirtysomething were big on tv
I earned around $2 an hour to babysit
My now-boyfriend was 7 (ha!)
I sprayed or moussed my bangs straight-up vertical
"Tear Down That Wall"
Scandals like Gary Hart and Jim Bakker
Peter Tosh was shot
A few men I knew died of AIDS
mini-crash on Wall St.

When I was thirteen:

M.A.S.H.
Mary Tyler Moore
Lawrence Welk . . . were all still on the air. For the first time.
9.gif

"Killing Me Softly With His Song" by Roberta Flack was the Number One Song of the Year. And The Carpenters were really big.

Forget DVDs. VHS had not yet been invented. We were using BetaMax. Or reel to reel.
No CDs. Eight tracks were the rage.

Not everyone had a ''push button'' phone; rotary dials were still the most widely used. And no cordless, of course.

We still wore dresses to school every day; and even the teachers were in miniskirts. Really short miniskirts.
31.gif

And that was 37 years ago. Lord have mercy.

When I was 13:

- It was the summer of love in Haight Ashbury.
- Light My Fire by the Doors was the #1 song, and we always waited to hear if the station would play the "long" version.
- There were Vietnam war protests and all my sister''s male high school friends were dreading the upcoming draft.
- Most people drove American cars.

Now THAT''s old.

When I was 13 there were no computers, cell phones and we barely had color TV

When I was thirteen:

The Twin Towers went down
I won''t even list the movies or the top ten billboard, because it just so happens you still probably hear them on the radio!!

When I was 13, I could eat as much and as often as I want, and never gain a ounce of weight.
Now I gain body mass on water...

When I was 13...

I was wearing baggy jeans, flannel shirts, and combat boots. Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and Stone Temple Pilots were gods, and I FINALLY got my own phone line for my bedroom! (No cell phones in our family yet, and my mom and dad had a pager for work)

Fun!
When I was 13...

I had my first kiss that summer, and then proceeded to dump him 2 weeks later for no apparent reason. He went on to become a world famous big wave surfer and has since been in Vanity Fair, on CNN, etc. and more recently, a recovering alcoholic/drug addict.

That year, the Cosby Show debuted. Thriller was the Grammy winning Album of the Year and Beat It won the Grammy''s Record of the Year and Song of the Year was Every Breath You Take.

My grandpa is one of those "Why, when I was a young man, a brand new vacuum cleaner cost under $100!" types. I always say, "Uh huh, and why did people make back then?"

It''s all relative...

When I was 13 all the girls had big, frizzy perms, and we used half a can of hairspray to keep our mall bangs up. The only acceptable eye shadow came in neon colors. We ditched our low heels and wore white socks with our party dresses on the dance floor at the bar mitzvah parties. And speaking of socks--the thicker and puffier the better, and we wore different colors and scrunched them down on top of our spandex pants. Oh, yeah--we wore spandex. The shiny kind.
3.gif
And we tied our oversized t-shirts to one side, and used scrunchies in our hair.

(Interesting that my memories of being 13 all revolve around fashion and style. Can you tell what I cared about back then?)

I don''t remember 13 clearly enough to age myself...but, I think Banaca (sp?) was the hottest thing in my school....
