Hi guys,

Just registered on this forum and I have to say that there is such a wealth of great information on this forum. I am the type of person that will research something to death when it involves a purchase, especially a larger one like this, so that i am able to make as informed a decision as possible. Work has been so crazy that i have not been to do much research and decided to stop by a very highly recommended jeweler in NYC to at least start looking at what my budget would allow me to purchase. Met with the owners who were very nice and informative and after much talking ended up purchasing a diamond and ring on the spot. Now this is not something i would normally do though the jeweler said that 1.3x diamonds have been harder to come by as of lately, not sure if this is true. The stone with the setting that i chose really seemed to catch my eye though. After finding this forum and only beginning to sratch the surface on research i'd like to see what you guys think of the diamond that i got as the jeweler said i can switch to something else if i change my mind. I plugged in the numbers into the HCA and it only achieved a 4.9. Below is a link to the GIA report, though i also attached it:

The diamond seems to have a minimal amount of imperfections in its clarity charistics when compared to many that i found online at BN and some other stores. The cost of the diamond alone was $8200 plus tax.

I am proposing to my GF on our 5th anniversary next month and she is such a great person and i just want to make sure that i make a good decision. What do you guys think?

Thanks for the insight. I wouldn't be able to return the diamond with this jeweler but. Can easily change it to another. A couple of questions though:

1. It seems like the cut is not ideal on this diamond. Sorry for being nieve but home come it scores an Excellent cut on the GIA report? Is it that the parameters that it looks for in a cut is too general?

2. If I am to look into other diamonds with this jeweler how can I be prepared to get a diamond with a better cut? Is the HCA a good tool? Unfortunately I cannot get internet service within the jeweler, is there an app perhaps?

Thank you

Try this site from Good Old Gold which talks about ideal cuts, based on AGS standards... which is stricter than GIA.

http://www.goodoldgold.com/classic/ideal_cut_diamonds.htm#

Of course, nothing beats seeing the diamond yourself. But if you can find diamonds that fits the AGS 0 perimeters, I will be curious if you find it more sparkling than the one you have.

Good hunting!

According to many here...HCA is an elimination tool, not a selection tool. This means that while there is no guarantees that a HCA score of under 2 will be a good cut, there is a 95% chance that scores above 2 will be a less than ideal cut. So the idea is to reject diamonds with scores of 2 and above, unless the price justifies the consideration. Hope this helps.

As for your clarity... try to get VS2s that have inclusions away from the table, which is usually the easiest to spot... though being VS2, it is likely to be eye clean... meaning, inclusions are hard to spot without magnification. You could try looking in the range of SI1 where the inclusions are not easy to spot with naked eye (eye clean) and are away from the table.

Unfortunately, based on what you said, you are stuck with the inventory of your vendor and you have limited time. Both not in your favor. Hope luck is on your side.

Hmm... not sure which ones you compare with... but take a look at this diamond for example:

http://www.bluenile.com/sg/round-diamond-1-carat-ideal-cut-i-colour-vs1-clarity_LD02030129

It has better clarity, better HCA scores (2.4), better dimensions, medium fluorescence compliments the I-color and is cheaper.

I know you can't change sellers but just wanted you to know what's out there so hopefully you can bargain more with your seller.

SInce you are stuck with your seller now, what I would suggest would be to see if they can get a few stones in your budget to look at with specs in these ranges:

Table: 54-58
Crown Angle: 34-35 (-ish, sometimes a slightly more deep or shallow can work too depending on pavilion angle)
Pavilion: 40.6-41
Depth: 60-62.3 (maybe 62.4)

These are guidelines for parameters of ideal cut stones. There may be some pretty ones outside these parameters, but I think you'd need a jeweler you can REALLY trust with a good eye for stones to go there. The other numbers are "safer" when you are shooting in the dark like you are.

Also, you might consider springing for an little idealscope kit so you can look at performance of the stones. It's very easy to use:
