HI All

I am currently in the process of buying an engagement ring and am looking for a diamond. In the process of cleaning my grandmothers estate out I was fortunate to find what I thought, and still do, was a beautiful loose diamond. I do not have much sentimental attachment to it but I do enjoy the story of using my grandmothers diamond for the next steps in my life. It was recommended to get it graded with GIA so I did and below are the results. I was ready to use it until I started playing the numbers game and comparing it to the "ideal" numbers. I come here seeking advise in keeping it or if I should sell it to and buy a more "numbers correct" stone.

What can I expect for value if I sell?

The number that bothers me the most is the table size. What problems will this cause in the overall appeal of the stone?

Also any use to re polishing a stone to get the rating higher than good?

Any other results that I should be concerned with?

What do you guys think? Good or Bad?

a very bad diamond choice and cut. I would avoid diamonds with such proportions at all costs. If you intend to sell it, a re-cut would be needed.

If there is sentimental value attached to it, it is a different story all together.

Thanks for taking the time to read post....that was a pretty fast edit. I liked your first response.

didn't want to be too brutally honest and hence edited the first response. i think that this diamond might be a good candidate (looking at proportions) for a recut that could potentially turn in into an Excellent cut from good while keeping it at 1 carat.

you might want to contact brian gavin and see what they can do about it.

I appreciate the honesty, I had a quick draw on the edit as well. At this point it is just a diamond that I found in a drawer, and either money in the bank for the final ring or the diamond I use in the end. There is absolutely no sentimental value to me. I know very little about diamonds but the more I know the more my response is similar to yours on the cut proportions. How does re cutting work and who is Brian Gavin? Is there a great risk associated with re-cutting? All I do know is that I like the H color and the VS1 rating. Thanks again!

there are definitely some risks involved in re cutting a stone. There are many factors to consider and it would be best for the cutter to give an assessment of your stone for an accurate diagnosis. Depending on where and the type of inclusions in the stone, recutting can potentially improve the clarity grade. More importantly, it transforms the diamond by giving it better cut proportions.

Ultimately, weight is always the driving factor as it influences the value of a diamond the most.

you might want to get in touch with them directly.

As a gift for someone else, I would see if a re-cut is possible. The good thing is I think you will just be losing dead weight, not much in diameter.

The risk is low, but the loss would be complete.

Thanks for the great and honest advise pricescope friends. I consulted with Brian Gavin Diamonds and after several calls with Lesley I sent my gia report in for review. Brian took a look at it and thought he could do something with my diamond, so today I sent it in! I have gone back in forth with how important using this particular diamond is to me, but if I can end up with a better performing diamond and use my family stone it will be the best of both worlds. I will update when I know more. Thanks again.

Congrats on finding a potential "diamond in the rough" . Dude, if Brian can recut that to ideal proportions and keep it at about 1.0 ct for you, you just saved yourself $7-8K easily. H VS1?? Excellent color and clarity... not a bad find at all!

Ask if they can take before and after pictures!

Well the verdict is in and it looks like Brian is going to wave his magic wand over my diamond. I will save the other images for comparison to the final results. I have a call with him this afternoon to finalize everything. My only request of him was to keep the weight over 1ct. If all goes well I will approve today and start the waiting game. I can't wait! Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction. It looks like the diamond should be everything I was hoping for while allowing me to use my grandmothers stone; which after much deliberation has become very important to me. Something tells me the light performance is going to be night and day.

In other news the setting should be on order by today. Attached is the stock image and not my diamond but gives you guys a little preview of what is to come.

I can't say enough good things about the level of customer service at Brian Gavin diamonds. I have been email bombing Lesley every step of the way and she has taken the time to answer every question I have without hesitation. The entire process has been extremely easy. I am now a believer and can understand why BGD is the first to be recommended for recuts.

Should be amazing when done!

Well the re-cut from BGD is complete and they did a fantastic job. I have yet to see the diamond in person but the images show a drastic improvement. My hearts image looks a little different than most I have seen here, but I have no doubt the diamond is going to look considerably better. I am so excited to get the stone on Wednesday! The setting has been waiting for the stone for about 3 weeks now.

I am not sure if i should start another thread or not but for the time being I will post here.

Looks great!
Worth the trip to weight watches!!!!!
If only dieting was easier in real life!!!

So cool to see the before and after. The hearts and arrows look great.

Wow - what a transformation! I think you're going to love the stone and it's a family stone to boot!

Can't wait to see the pictures of this stone in its new setting!

Thanks all for the great responses. It has been fun to share my story with you guys, and seek your advice.

The diamond will ship out tomorrow and I should have it by Wednesday. After a trip to GIA for an update to the cert I will have it mounted. I have already purchased a tacorri 2565 setting that has been sized and been waiting for its stone. It should look great once the stone is set. The plan as of now is to get a 24 hour turn around on the cert and then mounting. If i can pull it off I plan to propose this weekend! At this point she has no idea this has all been happening so needless to say she should be extremly surprised. I guess my next post will be in the show me the bling section.

Thanks again to all at pricescope that lead me in the right direction!!!
