Hello everyone,

I haven't posted anything in forever, but the last time I did I got some great advice so I decided to give it another whirl!

I just wanted opinions on two things:

First: knife edge band versus half round band?? I really want a plain 6-prong Tiffany style setting with a thin (2mm) band. But, couldn't decide whether I wanted the knife edge or half round. Do those of you with knife edge bands find it comfy? I've been hearing mixed reviews.

Second, I can't decide whether I should get white gold or platinum? I like the antique look platinum gets over time, so that doesn't bother me, but what metal is better to get?

All opinions would be greatly appreciated!! :geek:

Hi there...

I can tell you that Tiffany's knife edge rings are EXTREMELY uncomfortable. I own a diamond cluster flower ring from Tiffany's with platinum knife edge band. HURTS and RUBS, and my two surrounding fingers are always left with a raw type feeling, not to mention it just doesn't feel natural to have the knife edge design, you can feel the pressure constantly. Expensive ring yet highly uncomfortable. I always feel the knife edge and am conscious of it. Due to this I do not reach for this ring often, even though it is gorgeous.

Are you able to try this type of band on so that you can experience what it would feel like perhaps? That may help with your decision?

Personally, I like the color of platinum better than wg. I can't really say much more about that, however. I'm sure there are others with better knowledge than myself re: metals.

Are there spaces between your fingers when you form a palm? Some have fleshy fingers while others have knuckles that are bigger and the variations in between. Best way is to go and try the different design hands on at some jewelry store and see if the knife edge is uncomfortable to you.

Define what you mean by better? There are pros and cons depending on what factors you are looking at and what you define as better.

Thanks for the replies!

Future: I've heard that it's very uncomfortable (which is why I'm so concerned!). I actually did try both versions on, but it's hard to tell if a knife edge is going to be uncomfortable in the long run!

Stone Cold: I do have larger knuckles so I do have spaces when I make a palm. Does this mean knife edge may not be as uncomfortable?

Also, in terms of platinum: I've heard it is "better" because it's a harder metal.

Can anyone tell me the pros and cons of platinum vs white gold??

If you don't mind the patina of platinum, then go for it. White gold may have to be rhodium plated from time to time depending on how it reacts with your skin. For me, it's almost never for 18K so far, but for others it is once or twice a year sometimes. Platinum will scuff quickly, but it can always be polished to look like new again. For a plain setting like you are considering, you really can't go wrong with all platinum.

Yap, space between fingers generally means less contact, so less uncomfortable.

Engineering definition of hardness is how scratch/dent resistant a material is and generally, Pt alloys are softer that WG alloys, so most Pt alloys will scratch easier than most WG alloys.

Pt alloys are also more ductile than WG alloys, they are less likely to break more likely to bend, when hit with sufficient force, than WG alloys.
