a friend of mine asked for some advice on a diamond purchase (engagement ring). the budget for the diamond is $2,000. we have looked at some things, but wanted to throw it out to see if anyone is bored and wants to take a stab to try and come up with some suggestions. thanks!

4 C requirements?

eye clean, so SI1 is fine (if checked). color would preferably be H or better. i think he wants it to be about 0.7 carats, but of course bigger is always better. he values cut highly, and wants it to be great, but understands that a branded cut might not work with what he wants the size to be.

thanks for the advice. he''s been looking on blue nile. i know they don''t do an ideal scope image, but i am not sure he really requires that level of fine-tuning. here are a couple to consider, which on paper alone, seem to hold up to the ones suggested:
1. http://www.bluenile.com/diamond-search?filter_id=0&track=head#diamonds_pid=LD01428653

2. http://www.bluenile.com/build-your-own-diamond-ring?forceStep=DIAMONDS_STEP&track=tab#diamonds_forceStep=DIAMONDS_STEP|builder=BYOR|pid=LD01690161

i know that the information is limited with blue nile, but these seem reasonable. any thoughts warning against these choices? any strong arguments to consider one of the other suggestions, other than the possibility of viewing an idealscope image?

would you have any concern with (1) (which falls in the FIC range, but is VG on GIA''s scale, probably due to the angles)?

thanks.

Why BN? Considering their lack of idealscope image and no upgrade policy and similar pricing with JA, why bother?

If you really want to buy from BN, #2 is preferred, #1 might have obstruction issue and is not suitable for a ring stone.

BN is fine, but they don't have the tools other vendors do, IS etc. If you want to upgrade, you can't with BN. Just saying...

StoneCold, thanks for the replies! no need to use bn, but diamond 2 seems to fit all of his interests quite well. i did not see anything from ja that seemed to do that. the one you recommended is on the deep end, as you said. can you find something that compares favorably to 2 from ja?

by the way, i know that the first one has "unusual" angles, but it does fall safely within the fic range. why, then, would it be undesirable. this is more of an academic question, as my friend prefers diamond 2.

Depends on how well cut the stone is, it might have obstruction issue where part of the stone remains dark to the wearer most of the time. Need an idealscope image to check if that is detrimental.

My other beef with BN is that if you want an eye clean SI1 you cannot really buy it sight unseen by the vendor. Just another reason why I think JA is better for that price point and non H&A stones.

personally, i agree with the BN criticisms. however, i just don''t see anything ON PAPER better than (2) above. and as far as the JA suggestion, it just seems on the deep end. i guess he could request an IS image, but the 2.4 HCA score is not all that promising. if JA had access to that same (2) that BN does, i''d totally suggest to him to talk to JA for all the reasons you mentioned.

It is promising if you know what to look at else why do you think I recommended that stone to you?

The first does fall within FIC range but personally I would want an Idealscope image to check the stone out due to the pavilion angle, it is getting quite shallow which can be fine in this type of stone but equally it is quite shallow so needs proper evaluation.

The other might be fine but no way to tell again without an image.
