Hi Guys, I am new to posting but have been around for months!!!! This is a great site, probably the best on the net for friendly professional advice.....and so much dedication to bling!!!!!

Well my DH wants to buy me this stone.....I know that he is going for size. He is a jeweller and knows a thing or two about diamonds.....but he is not as knowlegable as many here.

The specs are as follows:

4.06 ct
9.32*8.84*6.21 (rectangle?)

girdle medium to slightly thick polished

cutlet none
symmetry and polish very good

color F

clarity SI2 (or probably P1)

Table 74.3% (large)
crown 35.5 degrees
crown 7.8 %

paviliion 59.6%
pavillion 40.1 degrees

I was a little dissappointed because I was dreaming of a killer cut, the motor etc. My dh swears that this will face up like a million bucks once set. And that size is king.

He will let me set it in any way. If I was to put sparkly diamonds all around, halo style, would that bring it up in looks?

FWIW, it does sparkle like a diamond, I have seen better and much worse.

TIA, Sharon

Sharon,
Do you like the stone? Is there anyway to keep looking without hurting your husband's feelings? This is a stone that I would personally pass on for the following reasons:

1. The cut isn't so good
2. The table at 74.3% is really too large. All I'll be seeing is the table glare, not multiple pinpoint sparkles
3. Crown height of 7.8% is way too low. Not much fire in this stone
4. Not square??? This is a sign of it being not well cut too. A PC is supposed to be square.

If I wanted size, I still would not sacrifice on cut. There's no point in getting a huge stone that doesn't sparkle much.

Chrono is giving good plain and simple advice.

I would ask your husband if the size is what you tell people, or what people see?

If it is words then this will be a BIG sounding diamond.

If size is something you SEE then it will be sparkly (all diamonds are) but will not look as big as many 3ct diamonds.

Sharon, I wish you well with your project and I wonder if you know of a way to broach the subject with your Husband regarding choosing another diamond in a way which won''t hurt his feelings? As this diamond is an SI2 clarity, is it eyeclean as it is such a large stone? If not or not quite eyeclean, then perhaps you could use that to say you can see something in the diamond inclusion wise which would bug you and maybe that might enable you to choose another more easily...

what is most important to you? i can''t tell from your post. i know you were hoping for a great cut but i can''t tell if that is more important than size or if you were just *hoping* to have a great cut as well. likely he''s getting a pretty good deal on a good size diamond and it''s hard to pass that up. as you noted, there are much better diamonds out there and of course, much worse. i''m just not sure what you want. hopefully you can be honest with your husband and together you can get what you want.

best of luck!

to me, that one line said everything. you don't even own the stone yet and you are trying to dress it up to make it look better to help you love it. i would get a stone that doesn't need help to look phenomenal or for you to
30.gif
it, and if that means one in the 3ct range, well, that's still nothing to sneeze at!!

ahh nvm... didn't see the subject title.. princss cut :-)

First I want to thank you all for saying what you did and with such diplomacy!!!! I could tell that a few of you were really holding back so to speak....and thats ok, because you are a fantastic lot of people who want to help but not hurt feelings!!!

My dh is the sort of person who you could never hurt his feelings, which gets frustrating sometimes. He just doesnt respond like normal people and he certainly could care less what anyone thinks of him. So even if I said the diamond is a dog...he would just laugh and say...well Im sure that I could find someone else who would be happy to get it!!!!

And fwiw, we have been married for almost 20 years, 3 kids, I am his only girl ever that he even dated...probably the only one who would put up with him!!!! LOL. I also have other jewellery and a proper cut stone (1.25 c) which is my er. I have many nice pieces!!! So I am not too deprived in general.

But when it comes to diamonds for some reason he loves a bargain soooo much and in his mind this diamond represents a big look for a small outlay. He believes that as a jeweller he knows it will face up beautifully in a setting and people will mainly look at its size!!!! And despite its awful stats. it doesnt look foggy or like frozen spit....it looks even pretty to the casual eye.

Now I personally wanted a big stone between 2- 3 that was well cut because of what I learnt here. But, my dh insists that it is this or nothing because he is sick of looking for diamonds full stop, and he actually does not see any value in a diamond anyway!!!!! He says that what I want in a 2 carat would be more than this anyway.

So I really do think it is this or nothing at least for a long time.

I am in Australia too if that makes any difference. Most of the diamonds I ever looked at were much more expensive than on the web from OS. But importing a diamond has other problems with tax etc and very hard to return also!

So finally, could I pull it off to get this set in a way to make it good eye candy??? eg halo

Personally with such a large diamond, I would set it with perhaps traps or baguette sidestones for a really classic look. I am just wondering how such a large square diamond might look with a halo, but I have seen an Emerald cut done this way and it looked superb! Maybe you have access to someone with photoshop who could do a mock up for you, or maybe someone here might see this thread and be able to.

If I can vent....my dh is the sort of guy that never lets you have a minute of peace!!! LOL And I can never trust him to do things the way that I would choose. I am slightly dissappointed to be honest.

Anyway, I will start another thread on settings. I cant imagine what setting would work for this shape????

Sharon I am so sorry you are feeling this way with all this. One thing I can suggest is if I link you to a thread with over 3 ct diamonds, there are some Princess and Radiants there which might give you some inspiration.

Here you go.
