Hello! This is my first post! Hopefully someone out there can help me since I don''t have a clue about what I am doing!

Here''s a GIA graded emerald cut diamond that I am looking at:

Measurements 9.44x4.43x3.59

Proportions

The ratio is: 2.13: 1.00

The asking price is $4300 which sounds really low to me but, then again, I am pretty clueless in this arena.

Any thoughts? Advice?

Well although you can't judge an EC by the numbers so much, with the info we have it would appear you can do better - and the price is very low - have you seen this diamond in person and who is selling it, is it being sold from a private party, jeweller or online auction/ vendor?

I see. The diamond is bottom heavy looking at the depth which along with other factors could make it look smaller for its weight, the symmetry is fair which also indicates this diamond hasn't been cut to the strictest standards so it is likely to not be the best performer. It is cut quality which makes a diamond beautiful, this is more difficult to judge in fancy shapes than with rounds, so it is best to purchase from a vendor who has inventory diamonds and photos and reflector images such as ASET to help you choose.

If you are really interested in this diamond then ask the vendor for detailed photos of this stone so you can see how it looks and if you like it. Also if you give us an idea of budget and what you are looking for, maybe we could suggest some diamonds?

My budget is about $6500. I would LOVE to have an asscher but think that they would look a bit small. I have gigantic, circus freak hands with sausage fingers. I need the largest diamond that I can buy because all of the smaller diamonds (even the really sparkly ones with excellent quality) look ridiculous on my hands. I am leaning towards an Emerald cut, Princess or an Oval in hopes that they will take up some space on my hands. I was thinking about a halo setting but might need a wide band. My last ring was somewhere between 10-12 mm in width.

So, in order to stop this rambling, I basically want a large diamond that looks good to the regular eye. My budget prevents me from having the best of all worlds.

LOL! Of course you didn't ramble on too much!! I do feel your pain with the hands as mine are large, but we can carry bigger rocks with aplomb - hehe!!

As to size for the carat weight, ovals can be a great pick as can pears and marquise and you can certainly add a halo to add even more finger coverage. An oval or pear halo could look stunning! With EC's you usually need a higher clarity as these shapes can show inclusions more easily than others. So you could consider SI clarity in an oval for example which would help maximise the budget ( GIA graded for example) as long as the diamond was verified eyeclean to your standards by a trusted vendor.

Is your budget just for the diamond or does it need to include the setting also?

The budget is for the diamond only. Right now I have a budget of $2000 for the ring but it might increase depending upon if we talk about it before or after happy hour. At this time, I am opting for an after happy hour discussion of ring budget.
