Hi everyone!

I was just wondering if I could please get some advice off you experienced diamond lovers!!

I am looking for a 3 stone princess cut diamond ring to celebrate my 30th birthday and I have found a couple that I would like some opinions on.

http://www.pompeii3.com/site/index.php?p=threestonerings&pp=detail&id=1237

http://www.pompeii3.com/site/index.php?p=er3stone&pp=detail&id=1238

If the links don''t work here is a basic description:

Ring #1
14k White Gold SI 1.50CT 3 stone Princess Cut Diamond Ring center stone .70ct, color H-I, clarity SI $1899 US

Ring #2
14k White Gold 2.00CT 3 stone Princess Cut Diamond Ring center stone .80ct, color H-I, clarity I1-I2 $1799 US

I am on a pretty tight budget, but I like the size of these two rings, and they fit in my budget. I will be getting it in yellow gold and I was wondering if the colour of the gold makes any difference to the way the inclusions would stand out.

I have read some previous threads about eBay sellers, so I know to be wary, but I actually found this companies website by chance, not through eBay.

I did email them to ask their advice and they stated:

"I think the I1 is ok, if your dont mind seeing some inclusion or blemish. Both rings have good sparkle and brilliance. The SI clarity ring would have more flash"

I am purchasing from Australia so I want to get it right!

Thanks in advance and I look forward to hearing what you have to say whether it is positive or negative!

Welcome!

I would recommend you contact some of the trusted PS vendors to ask them how much it would cost to create a similar ring, really we have no way of knowing how well these diamonds are cut ( and it is cut which gives you a beautiful diamond) or even if these diamonds will be eyeclean.

Check out the following, they are all very nice and they won't pressure you in anyway to buy!

Thanks so much for your reply Lorelei!

I will contact the places you have recommended, although like I said my budget is tight!!!!!

I just wanted big bang for my little buck! Probably should''ve thought about doing it before the exchange rate died!

Thanks again :)

You are most welcome! Do check the vendors out, you might be pleasantly surprised what they could come up with for you, if not then we can see where to go from there. Consider I or J colour diamonds of SI1 or even SI2 clarity - or verified eyeclean or almost eyeclean I1 clarity if available and you are agreeable to maximise the budget.

I checked out the ponpeii3 site and I must say the prices are astonishingly affordable. This vendor seems to specialise in I1 diamonds so that could explain the low pricing. If you are careful with the selection and find one which is eye clean, this could mean plenty of bang for your buck. But without GIA certs, I guess you gotta see the pieces with your own eyes before putting any money down...

So I or J colour would be OK? I had a jeweller tell me colour was "most important", other people state clarity as important, whereas the cut here seems to be the consensus.

Would a I or J look yellow against yellow gold, or more yellow if I set it in white gold?

The only problem with viewing is that I am in Australia so it might cost too much to have to return it if I don''t like it!! Are SI''s generally eyeclean?

I just wish the exchange rate was better. You guys seem to get great diamond deals from what I have seen!!

Thanks again guys, you have been great help!

Please don''t buy these diamonds from ebay - the vendor doesn''t know what they are talking about.
It may seem like they are cheaper - but considering you''re most likely getting one or two grades lower than the stated colour and clarity, and no idea on cut, its just not worth it.

Those are stock images, not a real photo of what you''re buying - so like Lorelei said, we really have no idea what it is you may be getting.

CUT is what makes a diamond perform, not colour or clarity - I think its best if you take some time to read up on the PS tutorials and also the ones at Good Old Gold.com. They are simple to understand and can really help you when buying.

Other than that, ditto Lorelei on the vendor recommendations - they are very good at helping you work to a budget. If you want, I can also suggest some Aussie vendors to look at to save money on import taxes /exchange rate etc (I live in WA).

You are most welcome!

Cut is definitely important if you are going to have beautiful diamonds, there are various levels of cut so you don't need to necessarily shoot for the top cutwise if you are on a budget unless you want to - one of the vendors who are very experienced could advise you on some nicely cut Princess for your ring which may not be of top cut, but still well cut. I or J colour ( GIA/ AGS graded) won't look yellow against yellow gold - I have recently seen a J in platinum and it looked very white indeed. I have an L colour in YG with WG head and prongs and it looks fine, so personally I think you could choose either.

As to SI clarities yes there are eyeclean ones out there, the trick is to let the vendor know exactly what your preferences are, for example if you don't want to see any visible inclusions from any angle at close scrutiny, then make sure you tell the vendor that so you are both on the same page. The vendors are very used to advising in this capacity ( another reason why it is best to work with a vendor who can physically inspect the diamonds), as it benefits neither client or seller to have diamonds whizzing back and forth because an accurate description of the diamond's " eyecleanliness" was not given.

And also see what AJ can suggest for Aussie vendors, I do understand your exchange rate is pants at the moment...

I have taken your advice on board and have decided to get quotes from various reputable sellers. Also have decided to put it off a bit longer

so I can save a little more cash!

AJ if you could recommended someone from Australia that you would be confident with that would also be fantastic.

If I was to purchase from USA would there be taxes on it? I never took that into consideration so if anyone knows approximately how much a ring would cost to import that would be great information too!!

Also AJ, you mentioned you were in WA. Have you ever heard of Jogia Diamonds? They operate from W.A. but you can buy off the internet and view in all capital cities.

Thank you all so much once again! This is such a great service you guys are providing!!

Glad to help and thanks for the very kind words!!

That sounds like a great idea to wait a bit longer and save, I think this will be well worth doing!

AJ should be along presently and I am sure she will have lots of tips for you, she is a real asset especially with our Aussie PSers who need help!!!
