Hi all,

I just recently bought the following diamond for my GF/future fiancé but as I was reading more about dimonds on this forum I wonder if I made a wise purchase especially since it is certified by EGL. Can you please let me know if I paid a fair market price?

Cut: Elite Cut Princess (http://www.eerobbins.com/OurDiamonds/UniqueCutsEliteCut.aspx)
Facets: 93
Carat: 1ct
Dimensions: 5.48-5.37 x 3.84
Total Depth: 71.5%
Table Width: 70%
Crown Height: 10%
Pavillion Depth: 57%
Girdle: Slightly Thick
Polish: Very Good
Symmetry: Very Good
Culet: None
Clarity: VS1
Grain: Nil
Color: H
Fluorecent: None
Price: $5525

Thank you
Bo

Welcome!

Firstly, which type of EGL report does this diamond have? Is it EGL USA, Europe, Israel etc? Some experts believe that the accuracy can vary. Also I imagine this is a branded cut Princess, you can't tell much by the numbers unfortunately, even to compare stones. I guess you are not that happy with the diamond if you are looking for more?

Great tools to help you buy a Princess or other fancy cut are ASET images and photos of the diamond.

The best recommendation I personally think, is to go with a vendor who has in house diamonds and has done the cut analysis and can see the diamonds. I would check out www.goodoldgold.com and www.whiteflash.com and some of the others who have the tools, in house diamonds and expertise to help you.

Unfortunately, for fancy cuts, the numbers might look nice but the stone may not live up to it. I don''t see any red flags but who knows? Also, stones with the same numbers can look very different as the cert does not give you every angle for all the different facets. Therefore, comparing the stats to the Blue Nile stones (or any other) does no good at all as the comparsion is useless.

Do you have any real picture of the princess cut stone?
Also, is this EGL USA, Europe, Isreal, etc? If pressed, I''ll get EGL USA but not the other EGL certs as they are known to be very lax is grading the colour and clarity. So it might say H VS1 but you might have a I SI1 stone or something like that.

Thank you all for the feedback. I looked at the certificate but it only says EGL and it has a list of labs in US and EU so I am not sure which one it is. I am planning to stop by the store and ask them.

Thanks
Bo

Thank you all for the quick responses. I was a bit in a hurry earlier but here are responses to all questions:
1. The diamond cut is Princess Elite
2. My fiancé is happy with the diamond but since I bought it a bit in a hurry I have started to question myself. I know I shouldn''t do it since she likes it but that''s me.

3. Since I did not know much about ASET I never requested it. The diamond is already mounted but I will see if I can ask for ASET report anyway. Also based on the old grading chart for Princess it is 1A-1B but I understand that it might not matter much and that there is a new way to evaluate them.
4. I can attach a real picture but the diamond is mounted so I am not sure if it is still useful. Please let me know if you still would like it.
5. I did not get a chance to go to the store but the certificate says EGL International and shows www.egl-labs.com which only shows sites in Europe and the contact location is in Israel. If I have to go by this, the cert is probably from EU or Israel. Also the little paper in which the diamond was wrapped says "Made in Israel".

At this point, I will try to get the ASET report but please let me know if I have missed anything.

Thanks again for all the help. This forum really rocks and I wish I had spent more time researching here before buying it

Interesting, my last response was just blocked. So let me try again...I said that while I am not allowed to comment specifically on a particular stone/vendor/or any number of other subjects...If the stone was graded by EGL Israel, you may need a second opinion.
