Hello all,

Desperately need some of your knowledgable input on a used diamond I am considering purchasing. The diamond is GIA certified, which I understand to be the most well regarded lab.

Certificate: http://tinypic.com/r/5b2248/9

Cliff notes: 1.86ct Round,natural, G, SI2, Excellent

As far as the proportions go - does this look like a quality diamond? It gets a "4.3 - Good - Only if price is your main criterion" on the HCA tool. I'm not really sure on the significance of that number, but yes, price is the main criterion!

From pricing on WhiteFlash and Blue Nile, this is a $12-14k diamond. I expect that I could purchase it for around $8-8.5k in an 18k solitaire white gold setting. Plan is to have the diamond placed in a setting something like this:

http://www.whiteflash.com/engagement-rings/solitaire/cheri-3-stone-diamond-engagement-ring-3631.htm

I would meet the seller and have the diamond appraised for accuracy at a jeweler of my choosing. If all checks out, is this a sound route to getting a $15-17k engagement ring on a $10k budget?

All advice, cautions and flaming appreciated!

There is your answer. I'm guessing you cant get an idealscope image to check on light leakage? You can order an idealscope image
here
http://datlas.com/ideal-scope-store/ for about $25.

My other advice would be to take it to a unbiased appraiser- not a jeweler and ask for their honest opinion.

You are spending $10k on this ring. Just because it's a deal doesnt mean its worth it. Make sure it's worth it by getting some
unbiased advise on the cut quality of the stone.

Thanks for the link TyTy, finding a quality appraiser would be my next question!

I see there is an unbiased appraiser near me.
