Hello all! First off want to say how great this forum is and the people that make it so wonderful. I can’t tell you how much this website has helped in a short time and continues to do so. I thank you ahead of time for reading through this novel.

Anyways, it’s about that time in my life where I finally tie the knot with my girlfriend. We’ve been together for over 7 years (started dating in early high school) and I’m looking to propose very soon. I really didn’t have any idea what I was in for though, or else I would have started way sooner! Recently I had walked into 2 B&M stores and just had no complete idea what I was doing. (Not a great feeling). I’m an avid Slickdeals.net guy and was referred over to this website for help and information. So that brings me to now… I’ve been lurking on here for a little bit and learned a lot so far (Still tons to pick up on unfortunately). I’m needing some advice on a few things…

Here are the facts:
1) She really wants just a huge OVAL diamond (don’t really think she knows how much play goes into the other factors of selecting a diamond though)
2) She doesn’t want a gaudy setting…something really thin that makes the oval diamond look larger. I’ve caught her really liking the Henry Wilson micropave setting. No half moons ect...
3) Been saving for many years anticipating this event…I have a lean budget of only $5,000 though

I’ve read on here that ¼ of your budget goes toward the setting, 5/8 goes to the diamond, and then 1/8 to something else…(can’t remember right now!)
My thoughts are this: I want to get her the ring she wants… figure since she’ll have this ring the rest of her life I would put as much of my budget toward the stone than the setting as possible. Honesty I’m leaning towards a thin band with no diamonds (which I know will be fine). Maybe a fine beaded setting. We can always upgrade the setting on our anniversary in the future when I’m able to save up again. Thoughts to as how much I should budget for this simple, thin setting? I was thinking $1,000 to be safe?

Cut: Most important I keep reading… I think “AGS Very Good” (2) would be the lowest I would go. Maybe higher though.
Carat: Largest possible with the other factors in place. Looking like it’ll be around 1k, hoping for more
Color: Since it’s an oval and can show color more easily than say a round I would prefer to stick to “H”. Read a lot where some see yellow in the “I”…I’ll stay away
Clarity: SI1 pushing it? I would probably feel better about VS2 though
Depth and table: Know it’s kind of a personal preference but I’m stay within table % of 53-61.5% and depth % of 59.0-63.0%

As to searching for diamonds…do most just select stones from the PS search…or is just contacting the reputable companies and have them search out the best way of doing things? As I get the time here and there I was planning to write a little code with SAS to narrow through the PS search results with all my parameters in place and get a better idea of the size stones I’m within budget for.
Let me know if I’m heading the right direction and any information what so ever to help me out is appreciated!

I'm so sorry, I know NOTHING about ovals! I do hope that someone comes along that can help though!

Here is a post I recently made on another oval thread:

Yay three stone oval! That's my engagement ring!
Ovals are fancy shapes that cannot be decided on by stats. You must look at it or have someone knowledgeable you trust look at it for you. GOG can do ASET's and videos and tell you what they think.
Make sure you get ones that aren't too fat and squatty or too long and skinny. Not too deep either or it will face up small for the carat weight. No one wants that! I was looking at a 1.84ct that had the same dimensions as a 2ct because it was well cut with a 60.1% depth.
Find an oval without a too obvious bowtie. Go for GIA certs for all three stones.

I'm sorry if I'm telling you things you already know, I just get excited about three stone ovals!

Hopefully Gypsy will be along soon because she has a great eye for ovals; but I would say, based on reading a lot of PS, contact someone at James Allen or Engagement Rings Direct.
A HW style micropave halo is big bucks. I'd say go for a nice big diamond now a dress it up later for an anniversary like you suggested.
You can get eyeclean SI1 stones as long as you know how far away from your eyeball it will be before it is eyeclean, and it depends on what kind of inclusions there are and where they are. For me, eyeclean is me seeing nothing at all mm's from my eyeball.
As for colour, I'd usually say go and look at a bunch and see what you can tolerate, but you won't find a lot of ovals. Still, go look at different coloured similar cut rounds and see what you think.
Cut is always king for maximum sparkle, but with fancy cuts like ovals, you can't just go by labels of good, very good, excellent, etc. try to find an oval that isn't football shaped, too fat or thin (a good length to width ratio is 1:3-1:4), one that faces up large without being too shallow, has minimal bowtie, and has six or eight pavillion main facets. Most of all, one that looks nice and sparkly and fiery. You will have to choose with your eyes (or trust a pro, or post pics and ASET here) with fancy cuts.

Congrats on your upcoming engagement! :appl:

Just searching along here...
Would this be something to be interested in? Looks like has the specs I would want. Next I guess would to be request an ASET image to determine how well the cut looks. Thoughts?

I am not an expert, and may be wrong, but to me that one doesn't look promising. It is long and skinny, and quite shallow. There is no picture to see shape and no access to the GIA report to view the inclusion plot. There is also no remark on fluorescence.

ETA:
I thought this was pretty. Again, not an expert.

Really small table, and that feather might be visible, but good spread and nice cut. Strong fluor could be cool!

Here's a link to info on ovals: https://www.pricescope.com/wiki/diamonds/oval-cut-diamond

Preferred depth is 59-63%. You'll want to find out whether your lady prefers longer ovals or shorter, fatter ones (sometimes referred to as "rovals" here).

Good luck! Oval is my favorite shape. They're not as popular as rounds (and don't perform quite as well), but there's less competition for them.

Thank you JaneSmith! Yes, I would say eyeclean for me would be the same…not seeing inclusions at all with my eyes. I’ve been to a few more B&M stores but like you mentioned, they just don’t have any in stock. Of course I completely understand they’re going to stock what sells and fancy cuts aren’t as popular as rounds. One thing I didn’t find too help was at a couple of stores they only had 1 oval but they weren’t certified. They couldn’t really tell me the exact color and clarity ect. Just an “Oh that’s an H color or better and SI1 or better.” I really didn’t look at and examine the Color of rounds though just because I’ve read Ovals will show more color just because of the elongated shape.

Yeah looking into it a little more I would like it more proportionate with the length to width ratio of around 1:3-1:4 or so but pictures will be the most helpful. That diamond you posted is very pretty but believe I see an inclusion in the middle there and I don’t have to have a D color. Would rather put that money towards the cut or larger diamond.

Thank you. I know my lady prefers the oval to NOT be a “Roval”. She definitely wants everyone to know it’s an oval off the bat. I’ll dig more into this with her inconspicuously. Also, I’ve been referring to that helpful table.
I’ve also been referring to these:
https://www.pricescope.com/tools/hca
http://datlas.com/AGA_NAJA_Cut_Class_grader/index.php (Think the lower number is better, correct?)
http://datlas.com/shapeselector.htm

My "roval" is L/W 1.29 and it's definitely an oval. No way to mistake it for anything but. Sounds like she may prefer the longer ones, though.

HCA tool only works for round brilliants so dont even try for an oval.

You can not buy fancy cuts (ovals) by the numbers. You really need images and aset image. I suggest you look at
James Allen.

You can call ID Jewelry and tell them what you are looking for (nice shape, minimal bow-tie, nice faceting pattern, etc) and
see what they can find you. Ask if they can send you some pictures.

If you use the advanced search here on PS, you can narrow your choices considerably. No need to write a SAS program to deal with that. Advanced search gives you options like table percent, depth percent, and several others.

(who teaches SAS programming but didn't catch your reference to SAS until I reread your original post just now!)

I hadn’t used that HCA tool but now I see it only works with rounds…oh well. But yeah looks like I contact a couple online vendors and see if they can get me pictures / ASET images. I went to a few B&M stores to view stones today but unfortunately only 1 out of 4 had one oval to view.

Doi! There’s that advance search! I thought it was odd I couldn’t search by table and depth. Saves some cluster on my computer rather than having a few windows open. Thanks a lot!

I agree...call Yeukutiel at IDJ and see what he can come up with.

I'm not crazy about the size...Would rather put the money towards lower Clarity and more K. Thoughts?

BTW looking for minimal bowtie...I myself aren't a stickler about it but the soon-to-be wants it minimal one. Would this pass?? Thanks for the advice!!

Im not sure how big that bowtie. what did the gemologist say about it?

Have you seen this one?
http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/E-I1-Ideal-Cut-Oval-Diamond-1493168.asp

It looks very large with that ratio, and I know its an I but I would ask them if its eye clean, because it has potential. But yeah, hopefully someone will be able to tell if that bowtie is a deal breaker
