I'm thinking about one of those two rings. Budget is around those prices. I don't know much about rings and jewelry. Just started my research today.

Base on my research, people are suggesting to buy the diamond separately than the ring (is it called a setting?). But I noticed that when I search for the setting, the prices can be like 1-2k. So I'm looking at a minimum 1ct ring and a setting like those. Can this be had, about around 5-6k? Total?

Thank you.

The two settings you picked are really different. The first can be had for a few hundred dollars, so that leaves you plenty for 1 ct diamond.

The second setting is more expensive, but that specific ring has a .75 ct center, which would fit your budget easily

DON'T buy from Kay's! For so many reasons... :errrr:

Which setting do you like the most? They are very different. A plain solitaire setting can be very affordable and gives you the option of resetting it in the setting of her dreams sometime down the road.

Do NOT compromise on cut quality (not the shape of the stone, but the optical properties - the light return. It's what makes the diamond sparkle!). A well cut round will face up larger and whiter than a poorly cut one. And don't get too hung up on "1ct" etc - an ideal cut 0.95ct will look exactly the same.

I'd start looking at some of the reputable online vendors here (Good Old Gold, James Allen, Brian Gavin, Whiteflash, IDJ, etc) - they have a proven track record and can provide light performance information (Idealscopes, etc) so you know you are getting a great stone.

IDJewelry has worked wonders on tight budgets before - may be worth contacting them. And JA prices tend to be very competitive, and you get a Pricescope discount (small, but every penny counts, right?).

If I were you I would buy the best stone I could for your budget, and put it in a simple solitaire with the intent of resetting it when funds become available in the future. That way she gets exactly what she wants!

Any of these look nicer than the Kay solitaire. You can do them in 4 or 6 prongs... Get what she prefers, but if unsure I'd go with 6 prongs. More secure, shows of the "roundness" of the ring, and makes the diamond appear larger because it forces the eye all the way around it instead of just to the four corners.
