Advice on E-ring bought at Kay''s

"Cheap" doesn't sound right. I'd call it maximizing the quality for the least amount of money, or "best bang for the buck".

Princess cut stones are almost always cut deep at close to 70% depths. If you want something that looks large, I'd suggest rounds which normally has a 60% to 62% depth. A 1 ct round at approximately 6.5 mm is already the size of your 1.5 ct princess cut. However, if she likes PC, then that's what you'll both have to accept.

I want to chime in and say a couple of things about the setting. If this is the setting she wants, than this is the one you should get her. However, that doesn''t mean you are stuck buying your stone at kays. Any pricescope vendor could easily achieve the look of this setting and probably do it for less and with a higher quality finish doing a custom design. It may also be possible that you could buy your stone somewhere else and buy the setting at kays...although I would advise to do the former rather than the latter.

I am. I''m also searching around places like Blue Nile and using the toolbar at the top. I wish it were this easy to search for settings.

You''re lucky you have a 90-day return policy! You should be able to find comparable (and better stones) that are less expensive within that time period! Kay may have some GREAT stones. I''ve seen fabulous ideal stones at many mall jewelers and Ben Bridge even sells a few AGS 000s. It''s just the PRICE that''s the killer!

If you save a few thousand, you can possibly use that money to get your girlfriend an amazing pendant!

There are things about the style of the ring that I do find attractive... the view from the side (with the triangles upside down and right side up) is lovely. Buuuuut, um... OY those prong tips! Could they be any bigger or blockier?! I am a bit prong-obsessed (I admit it), but IMVHO, those prongs just reeeeally detract from the stone, and "cheapen" the ring style in general.

Again, my humble opinion only, but I think prongs and prong tips are easily overlooked (especially by guys -- no offense to your gender intended, of course!

) but can really "make or break" a ring''s style and beauty.

I never thought about that. Thanks for pointing it out. I guess thinner prongs would look more sleek. The only think I wish about the setting was that it was in Platinum. I guess Amex has gotten me obsessed with Platinum.

Here's the breakdown according to the receipt.

Diamond - $7,224.99

Setting - $2,474.96

Appraisals - $300.00

Service Plan/Warranty - $149.99

Sales Tax (NYC) - $850.06

Total - $11,000.00


So the ring was really $9,700.00. The rest of it was taxes, warranty and appraisals.

Ok, I just found a similar setting at http://www.engagement-ring-mountings.com/ring_settings_info_1424.htm

It's $350 more than my current setting but in Platinum. If I want to stick with White Gold, it's only $1300. I will have saved $1,000. Does anyone know if this website is reputable? If this works out, I might be able to get a Platinum setting and a better diamond for the smae price. Thanks Pricescope and everyone that helped educate me.

my humble advice to you is to STOP searching the internet and wait for you appointment with Mark at ERD. Take the ring to him. Have him make one like it and get you a diamond bigger and better than the kay diamond. By the time that you leave you will have a gorgeous ering in the works for your FF that she will love and YOU will be able to go directly back to Kay's and return the ring.

Sound like a plan? Good? Glad we agree LOL I am joking... but really... marks rep at ERd is steller here on PS. He will no doubt take care of you.

Update:

I never made it to my appointment with Mark because I showed her the ring and she fell in love with it. I was going to return it and said to myself, "What the hell, I''m gonna show her the ring since I''m going to return it today." Big mistake. She saw the ring and wants to keep it. We went to Kay''s to get the ring resized (she''s not as 9 as I thought, she''s a 7.25) and they also changed the head. Like an earlier poster here felt, she also felt the prongs were too big and cheapened the ring. The new head has smaller, thinner prongs and they hug the diamond better and don''t protrude.

I got the diamond appraised at UGL and it appraised at $18,400.00. This was the retail appraisal amount. The wholesale appraisal amount was $9,200.00. The setting was actually 1.25 carats versus 1 carat. I guess Kay''s made an error.

UGL found another error. They felt that the diamond met the IGI certification except for one thing. The color grade. The diamond fell between the I and the J grade. They said that they would have to call the diamond a J since GIA grades on the lower grade if the color falls inbetween. IGI would grade on the higher grade so that is where the I came from. They felt that the diamond was VS1 quality and the cut, etc were very good. An all around good diamond.

All in all, they felt that I got a good deal at Kay''s. They said that mall stores charge retail price and that is why people go on the internet or the diamond district since they charge wholesale prices but Kay''s sold me the ring at close to wholesale price and gave me the lifetime warranty, rhodium plating, cleaning, inspecting, repair, resizing, etc. package so all in all, it came out ok.

I can''t believe that the retail amount was double the amount of the wholesale. The gemologist at UGL said that Kay''s would have usually charged the retail price or close to it but she never heard of them charging so close to wholesale.
