I''m beginning a diamond hunt and feel completely overwhelmed. I''ve looked at a bunch of the online retailers and this diamond popped out at me from union diamond

Cut: Radiant
Measurements 5.61x5.29x3.98
Size: 1.01
Color: D
Clarity VS1
Cert: GIA

Table: 65
Depth: 75.2 (seems steep)
Polish/Sym: VG/VG
Fluro. None

Here''s a link
http://www.uniondiamond.com/diamonds/diamonds.php?search_type_id=2&action_type_id=2&context=&rb_flow_type=&rb_action_type_id=&item_id=AA966302#

They want $3500 for it. It seems too good to be true. Without a PS image so far, what do you think?

Thanks,
Chris

I''m not an expert, but as you mentioned, the depth does seem terribly high.

Hopefully some of the real experts will chime in.

Radiants can't be judged by numbers, can you ask UD for photos of this diamond, and see if they can also provide an ASET image if possible? The price does look low, especially when compared to similar...

Will do. What is an ASET anyway?

Unlike round brilliant diamonds where you can use the proportions and HCA to help you make a selection -
there are no widely agreed proportions for fancy shape diamonds and so you cannot use the same analysis (depth/table etc) for fancy shapes.

In fact AGS''s performace-based grading system is the only one that can be applied to fancy shapes - they currently grade princess cut and emerald cut and have plans to grade some more fancy shapes soon.

I am afraid that there is no easy way for you to choose your radiant diamond online from just the certificate.

I just went through the process of searching for a radiant. My experience with stones that were in the 70s depth-wise, was that they all had the bow-tie effect going on, which I''m not a big fan of.

I read a lot on the "original radiant" website and kind of used their numbers as a guide. Here''s a link:

You''ll read it over and over on these boards, fancy cuts have to be seen to be appreciated. The numbers can only take you so far and I wholeheartedly agree! Good luck!
