Looking at a 1.73ct GIA graded I, Si2, 63.7% depth, 58% table, 35.5° crown angle, 41.8° pavilion angle, Final cost $8,700. Good buy or not. Didn''t score well HCA. Any thoughts?

How did it look? If you really loved it, then the numbers don''t matter! But it would not fall into ideal cut range. What did the GIA cert say for cut? I''d also be very careful to check out SI2 inclusions. SI1 and VS2 are usually safer for a ring stone (but that is my personal preference, not a rule!). It may be a pretty good price for what it is. You can get a better diamond than that, but it will probably cost a little more.

It looked great, GIA graded the the cut "very good" The clarity was a SI2 due to a feather that didn''t affect the look to the naked untrained eye.

Please stick to the guidelines ds and I gave you.

This stone is way too deep in depth, and the CA and PA are not complimentary.

I have nothing against an SI2, IF it''s totally eyeclean.

Try again.

Or, if you want to tell us your budget we''d be glad to help!

If it didn't score well don't buy it.

The math behind the HCA may be complex but the concept is simple.
A well cut diamond (score under 2.0) will return more of the light entering the top back through the top.
Light will not leak out the bottom.
The stone will not have a dark center or other problems.

Think of a person standing across the room with a mirror.
She has to hold the mirror at just the right angle for you to see yourself in the mirror.
If the angle is off the light will not go where it is supposed to go.

A diamond is just a complex little box of many mirrors and windows.
They will work together and do their job only if every surface is at the right angle.

HCA score tells you how well a diamond does its job.

BTW notice your diamond is very deep.
They do that to save more of the rough diamond material to make a heavier stone.
The public wants heavy stones, they don't understand that when they are cut for weight the angles make it perform poorly.
That diamond makes more money for the owner because they didn't grind away as much of the precious material.

In order for a diamond to perform well it has to be more shallow.
95% of diamonds are NOT cut well.
The public is ignorant.
All they know is they want a 1-carat.

You are one of the lucky ones.
You are getting informed.
You stand a chance of getting one of the few well-cut stones.

Don't blow it.

It''s too deep, it will appear like a 1.5 carat stone and probably doesn''t have great light return. I wouldn''t get it.

You still need to add the diameter to this list so we can tell if the stone is facing up as large as it should. Also, the girdle.

I just did this.
I entered weight: 1.5 - 1.8 ct
Cut Ex to Ex
H to J
VS1 to SI2
Any lab

It found 43 stones, all with an HCA score of 2.0 or under.
Priced from $7880 to $16,470
