I recently purchased a princess 1.61ct, H, SI2 from a local wholesaler that was recommended by a friend. After giving the ring to my fiancee, she and I both noticed blemishes or inclusions that were easily seen with the naked eye, but only from the sides of the stone with light behind the stone. The inclusions look like cracks or lines, not small black specs or knots. The inclusions are not visible from above only from the 4 sides. I thought SI2 inclusions were only supposed to be visible under 10x magnification. Am I wrong? I thought I got a good deal on the purchase, and of course the apraisal given by the wholesaler was more than the purchase price. Should I get another apraisal from a third party or just let it go? My fiancee doesn''t care and loves the ring, but the more I think about it the more it weighs on me..........I feel like a need some closure be it good or bad.

Any advice or help is greatly appreciated.

SI can have eye visible inclusions especially if it is from the side, even for GIA/AGS graded stone. It is a case by case situation.

Clarity is graded face up and it is actually not uncommon at all to see visible inclusions from the side views in SI clarities and sometimes from the top. Is it GIA graded? Also this is a possibility, does it look like a crack running around the side of the stone as in this picture? See about 2 thirds down the side of the diamond, if this is what you are seeing it is the girdle reflection and all diamonds do it.

No it really doesn't look like the picture. The crack? doesn't look the same from either of the 4 sides.

I can''t see the picture, but to answer your question the crack does not go around the stone.
Hit refresh and the picture should appear now.

When my fiancee gets home I will take a good look at the 4 sides. It doesn''t seem to be a line in the same location on all 4 sides.

Ok, have a look and see what you think.

Lorelei would the girdle reflection look different for a princess diamond?

AIMHI SI2 diamond often show inclusions to the naked eye, that is why they are priced lower than SI1 dimaonds. You can often find diamonds of that grade that are "eye clean" from every single angle, but it is finding a needle in a hay stack. I would suggest that you get is appraised to make sure it is the diamond described in the cert (which is important anyways), and if it is then you can either live with the inclusions and avoid looking at your diamond from the side OR you can pay more for a higher clarity grade.

What lab graded the diamond? How do you know it is even an SI2?

I have still noticed it with a Princess I had and others I have seen D, looks similar to rounds.

It looks to be the girdle reflection. Line is in the same location on all sides around the stone. Thanks for the explanation, I do feel better. There is one visible inclusion, which as pointed out is not uncommon on a stone of this clarity grade.

I had a similar experince I didnt think I should be able to see inclusions in my SI2 with the naked eye, so when I found a ugly looking inclusion from the side I kinda freaked out, you cannot see it from the top (i can lol, i know where it is)so I took my ring in for an independent appraisal and sure enough it was graded as a SI2, so you can see them from the side, but not from the top.
