Hi everyone.

I''m in the process of buying the diamonds for a 3 stone e-ring and have a question about the smaller side stones.

I know all about the exact details of the 0.77 F VS2 centre stone as it comes with the GIA Dossier but the side stones are a different matter.

My diamond trader has shown me what he believes are two beautiful 0.27 F VVS stones which to my untrained eye I agree but I was wondering about the importance of cut grading with these small stones.

The reason I ask is because he found the stones for me from a small packet he had marked ''F VVS'' with around 15 stones in it from which he found two which were exactly equal in diameter.

Should the cut of these stones be very important? Is this a common practice with smaller stones and is there any way I can find out the cut of them?

Thanks very much for any advice!

Small packet, yeah, I would think that's common practice.

The cut should be comparable to the middle stone...shouldn't outshine it and shouldn't look dull in comparison.

You could have Sarins run on both of them. He might try to tell you it's not necessary, and as long as it looks good compared to the middle, I'll probably agree.

Thanks JuieN, that''s very comforting to know. Especially the packet thing.

Hello.

I just came back from viewing all 3 stones again side by side in a tray and the two 0.27 side stones (F VVS no cut details) somehow seem whiter and brighter than the 0.77 centre stone (F VS2 GIA XXX HCA 1.6).

Could this be my eyes playing tricks on me? I suppose I have been looking at a lot of diamonds lately.

Your eyes probably were not playing tricks on you....smaller diamonds of roughly the same color/quality as larger diamonds will usually appear whiter and brighter.

As for cut grade of sidestones, my understanding is that most jewelers just use their eyes when choosing sidestones. Sidestones are almost always not certified stones. My sidestones were 1.14 tcw and were chosen by the jeweler who created my ring....he basically eyeballed them through a loupe and determined that they were well-cut and compatible with my center stone. If your jeweler is trustworthy and experienced, then he should be able to do the same with you.
