no i have not searched for it online.
I am dealing with a broker by email.
What do you think i should be paying for something like this?

I pricescoped the information and there''s very little out there for a comparison. Keep in mind that the prices posted below are for superideal AGS0 stones:
3.00 ct I VS2 $35.5K
3.03 ct H VS1 $70K
3.18 ct H SI1 $46.5K

It is hard to say as the prices can vary and depending on where you buy from, typically brick and mortar stores can be more expensive than online, what I would suggest as this is a sizeable purchase is to make the sale final ( and get it in writing) on the diamond checking out to your satisfaction in every aspect with an independant appraisal, then the appraiser can give you an opinion on the purchase price.

The guy has just come back with an offer of USD41,000 (plus tax). Seems quite reasonable.

Sounds reasonable. You are going to get this diamond appraised first using an independent appraiser, right? It''s such an expensive purcahse I can''t imagine not getting it appraised first.

Yes it does sound reasonable with the info we have, if you decide to go for it get an independant appraisal as this is a big purchase and an impartial expert opinion would be very useful. Another thing, in a diamond of this size make sure it is eyeclean from all angles, even though it is VS clarity it is possible you might be able to see an inclusion from the side, it wouldn't worry me but in a diamond of this size it is best to check.

Here is a tool you can use to find an appraiser in your area.

yes i will definitely have this diamond appraised. Is the GIA report not a good enough guide to go on or is it that I may be sold a stone that does not reflect the report?

With a purchase of this magnitude, an independant appraisal is very important in my opinion, you are spending a lot of money and an appraiser can assist in many ways, I would certainly want an impartial expert examination if I were spending that kind of money on a diamond.

This page describes the appraisal process and the services you can expect. Some appraisers are skilled at evaluating cut quality of a diamond, so will be able to give you an opinion on that also.

It''s good to have verification that the stone is indeed the correct carat weight, measurement, colour, clarity, the inclusions match the plot and also have the appraiser give you his opinion on the light performance of the diamond.

OK that is very interesting.

Does it mean that both these stones are visually not very appelaing to the eye?

I have not actually seen them in person yet.

I intend on spending up to USD45k (but more like 42k) and am not interested in going lower than an I cut or VS2.

What size of stone do you think I can achieve. Bear in mind it doesnt need to be the utmost supreme cut.

thanks
Luia
if i was to spent $45K...it better be a top cut stone. JMO
