All:

I'm designing a 3-stone oval ring for my GF and would like your opinion. What do you think about the prices for the following, and how do you think it will look? She doesn't want the traditional 3-stone oval look, i.e. all 3 stones are similar in size as in the picture above, rather she wants the center stone to stand out more.

1.15 G/VS2 oval- $5750
.50 tcw G/VS1 ovals (sides)- $1,500
Custom platinum ring, baskets, square shank- $1300

Thanks!!

Was this Q for Leonid (Administrator) ? Didn't get that part in in time... only after the post below was done.

You may want to compare the price of the sides here , but for a fine ring, that is more an academic exercise - not very practical. The price of having the setting made could have been higher and the sides less expensive... without changing the total cost. This depends on how the ring will be made and how high your expectations for the finished piece are.

If you would have it made somewhere, the only way to find out a relevant quote for custom work is ask the jeweler, I would think.

It feels a bit awkward to price someone's work by second guessing and them demand the optimistic price from them... and there are no perfectly matched examples I can think of. Perhaps someone else can chime in.

A bit aside the topic though... since the sidestones will be small (comparable in size to the shank of the ring), could they be round ? This setting could be made to fit an oval (and it is said it could fit any shape of center stone) and already has the small sides paced well below the center stone to leave it take the over the stage. Cost ? $1700...

I cannot know if this piece is remotely comparable to what you were planning to have made. Something as carefully proportioned as THIS could be worth all you say and more and understandably so.
