I posted this on DT, but am so anxious to have this done that I figured I would register and post here in the hopes that someone can give me a solid answer. From local jewelers I have heard yes, no and maybe...here is the situation

I love my wedding band ( its a plain platinum band) and am very sentimental about it so giving it up or ruining it is not an option. i would like to have 8-10 small diamonds (0.01)set into the ring ala tiffany and co.''s etoile ring.

1. can this be done
2. is there risk
3. how much?

thanks

I LOVE the Tiffany Etoile wedding ring! I have read several posts (here and DT) where people have had tiny diamonds added to plain bands, but I think they were added to gold. I presume this could be done to platinum just as easily. The majority of the cost will be in the stones which will depend on the cut. A 0.02 ct ideal cut cost about $25 per stone, 0.03 ct run about $45 per stone. The Tiffany's ring has 10 stones around the ring, and I believe they use 0.025 to 0.03 ct stones.

Stones less than .2 carat are called Melee. DiamonBob posted a thread about "Decorating with Melee" a while back. From reading the post, it sounds like what you want to do would be called Hammer Set. Here's a link to the thread:

Hi,

1. can this be done Yes
2. is there risk No
3. how much?
The prices posted looked like a likely range

If you were here in Australia we would charge $15 per stone to set them and about $15 per point for FG VS diamonds selected for brilliance with the ideal-scope.
There may be an additionla rhodium plating charge if the ring is white gold or platinum
