Hi all! nice to meet everyone. I have done a ton (maybe not enough) research on the forum and it seems there is always a slightly better deal from an online retailer. I guess for the ease of cleaning/servicing/insurance i'm leaning toward buying from RBs.

I did a comparison on BlueNile and found stones similarly in price but not too much difference.

This one is $24,800 from Robbins Brothers:

What do you think? Any input is appreciated.

Thanks,

David

If you have seen the stone and feel that it is well cut with minimum bowtie, then you certainly can buy locally. Just don't ever do it because of cleaning/servicing/insurance. I clean my rings myself, but if I want them cleaned by a jeweler, all I have to do it go into any nice jewelry store, look around, and often they will ask if I want my rings cleaned. If not, I ask and they are happy to do it. Insurance must never be through a jeweler because it usually doesn't cover a jewelry piece for every kind of loss. You need private jewelry insurance for that from somewhere like Jeweler's Mutual, or some people add a rider on their homeowners policy. I am always a little skeptical when jewelers try to make a sale by pushing their "insurance", because it rarely covers all kinds of loss including damage, lost ring, stolen, cracked diamond, etc. That is nothing more than a sales ploy that often requires the person to come in the store periodically to have the ring checked in order to keep the warranty intact.
