i am about to make a purchase on an engagement ring. it has been a very long and often frustrating journey... but in the end a rewarding one.

just wondering, what final reports should i have on the diamond before buying it. I have the GIA, do i need to get the IGI report to confirm that I am getting what the dealer is telling me he is selling me? I just want to make sure i am doing things right on these final steps

Thanks to everyone for their help

If you had an IGI report, we'd all tell you to get a GIA report. However, we would not generally advise the opposite. There are dozens of old threads indicating the lack of trust people have with IGI. I have seen some of IGI's work which I felt was accurate and far more where I would agree there are problems.

There are so many places that would possibly find a higher approval rating....Maybe some of the participants will give you some suggestions.

so are you saying that i don't need any further reports beyond the GIA? i already have been told the crown angles, the pavilon depth, etc.

just want to cover all bases here.

thanks

In the nicest way possibl,e I am saying that you may not want IGI to be your source of back-up information on a purchase. There are so many totally well respected other choices and so much negativity has been posted on IGI, that it would just make more sense to get the hand holding and advice you may want from one of many other places.

Some people feel they do not need any second opinions or further assistance. Others will tell you that there is a lot the seller may not have told them. It is not the same for every person or every sale.

There are all kinds of tests that can be done, depending on the resources of the vendor, but at this point, since it seems like you're about ready to pull the trigger, I'd suggest either having the diamond sent to an independent appraiser to verify the characteristics of the diamond before you buy it and confirm that you're making a good purchase, or if the company has a good return policy, take it to an appraiser yourself, once you've bought it. If you're having any doubts, or just want more of a warm fuzzy in your decision, that's what I would suggest. Then, there shouldn't be any more questions.

A dissenting opinion

You will generally find diamonds graded by IGI selling for slightly less than those with GIA 'paper'.
The difference in price would screen you against any likely or possible variations in grade if the same diamond was submitted to another lab.
I did a comparison with 6 stones last year and found the grade differences added up to 2 or 3% price difference - yet the market discounts IGI by considerably more.

Another factor - IGI give you crown and pavilion % data - not as accurate as i would like - prefer angles and not rounded %'s - but you can use this data with HCA to eliminate known lessor performers.

I suggest you consider what you can buy for a price and if you have the option of a GIA F SI1 and an IGI E VS2 for the same price, the IGI would be my pick hands down
