Hi everybody!!

After looking at dozens of stones i've narrowed it down to what I think is a good one in my budget. I have two questions.

1. Is an 'i' color too yellow, in any light, at any angle. I'm having a hard time wrapping my head about it, looking at the scale and where mine is (especially when i'm spending this kind of money). Which brings me to my next question, am I getting a fair price?

$7900, with a simple tiffany 4 prong white gold setting:

gia
round
1.42 carat
i color
si2
excellent excellent excellent
no fluorescence
(addtl clouds/pinpoints not shown)
medium-slightly thick faceted.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Hi

This is one of the most common questions. Almost all of the 4Cs guides out there show how D is the all beautiful colourless diamond while any colour further down the scale as increasingly becoming unappealing and as you put it "yellow" - THIS IS NOT TRUE.

To answer you question, first of all, well done on choosing GIA as the lab for your diamond as you can now be sure that their "i" will not be seen as a lower colour if graded elsewhere.

Generally we find customers can not see any yellow in "i" coloured diamond when looked at alone. Should you compare a "d" coloured stone and your "i" coloured one it may be possible for you too see a faint difference in the colour, but this will be very subtle.

As you have chosen a white gold ring it will be possible that the diamond looks less white/colourless in the setting than if you had chosen a yellow gold setting but again, I do not think this will be highly visible.

I noticed you mention you chose a diamond that is triple excellent and with no fluorescence. In our experience for lower coloured diamonds, "i" to "l", like this one, some fluorescence, for example, "medium" may actually improve the appearance of the stone as the blueness that comes from its interaction with UV light (which is a part of natural sunlight) kind of hides the slight yellowness of the stone.

You are also paying a premium for a triple excellent none fluorescence diamond because of its rareness, but in terms of comparing it to another stones that is say, triple excellent medium fluorescence, there is unlikely to be any difference in the appearance, and if there is, it could be that the fluorescence actually improves the diamonds colour.

IMPORTANT: I am much more concerned about your choice to have an SI2 clarity. IT IS VERY LIKELY that your diamond will have a visible black inclusion in it which will affect its beauty far more than the colour unless you have already seen the diamond and it is ok.

I would suggest you keep the colour as it is but improve the clarity by at least one grade to SI1 and to not be so strict on needing none fluorescence (or even excellent symmetry or polish as very good will be almost as good but at a better price).

Good luck. Please contact me if you would like us to quote you on a stone that fits your criteria but also ensure that there are NO BLACK or visible inclusions in your SI1 or SI2 diamond.
