Seems like the pace of development of fair trade diamonds is slow, no? Not too much action on this front? Vendors and experts?
Note...on the ethical scale, these are not the norm, where a target for the miner might be a living wage, vs. conflict free, which is the norm, and where you would like to think no one was killed to get the goods.
I raise this by way of contrast. That is, having not heard the topic raised in a while, Rapapport pinged me with the following:

Rapaport Fair Trade Jewelry Conference at BASELWORLD
Monday, March 30, 2009 - Basel, Switzerland, 10:30-13:30
February 9, 2009, New York -The Rapaport Group will sponsor the first Fair Trade Jewelry Conference at the prestigious BASELWORLD Watch and Jewellery Show. The conference will take place Monday, March 30, from 10:30 until 13:30 in the Montreal Hall at the Basel Congress Center. The Basel Congress Center is located across the street from the show.
This conference will provide an opportunity for leading jewelry industry stakeholders to discuss and learn about Fair Trade Jewelry opportunities and recent initiatives. It will also provide an opportunity for members of the Fair Trade community to learn more about the jewelry industry and opportunities for cooperation with the private sector.
The conference is free and open to everyone. Members of the jewelry trade and fair trade communities are encouraged to attend.
