A rectangular Princess... What do they look like?

I was doing a search for emerald cut using the pricescope engine. I guess I wasn't paying attention, because I ended up with results for "Princess", which I was not really interested in. However, the results gave a bunch of rectangular princess cuts. I always looked upon princess cuts as being square. Nearly all of the results are from one vendor.

Does anyone have photos of rectangular princess cuts? I searched and didn't really find anything. Now, I am kind of intrigued.

Never seen one. I think if I wanted a princess I would stick to square, but if I wanted rectangular I would go with a cushion.

I have a friend who got a rectangular princess. She really wanted a radiant or cushion cut but couldn't find one at Derco where her ring came from. Hated the emerald cut's clarity, but loved the shape. Loved the sparkle of the round brilliant but hated the shape. She liked the squareness of the princess but hated little sparkles.

So, somehow she ended up with the princess. Five years later, she let it all out about how she dislikes it.

Btw, it's kind of a weird shape. If I had a pic I'd post it, but it would be weird for me to do that.

The higher symmetry of the square vs. a rectangle can give you better light performance...of course, a square Princess poorly cut...that''s another problem.

Don''t worry, it''s not that scary

It''s more that I''m not used to seeing a rectangular princess. It wasn''t set how emerald cuts typically are, it was set horizontally. I thought that was a bit odd. It''s still a pretty ring, just a little different the more she kept pointing out the rectangularness of the stone.

Are you looking to get something like that? If you are, I''d say look at the radiants as well and compare. I have no idea how the cutting works and why princesses are only cut as squares and why radiants are cut as rectangles. Perhaps if someone can answer that question it will enlighten us?

Oh wait, I think you did answer the question. So the princess is cut as a square because it gives better light return?

When I was in cosmetology school, far before I really started noticing diamonds, I had a good friend who had a an elongated princess cut.

Like I said, I didn''t know anything about diamonds, but I remember thinking "wow, that look strange". It was nearly a 2ct -- around 1.90, if memory serves me -- and it was clearly longer than it was wide.

I guess, my feeling is, that if you want a "princess" cut, it''s probably for the shape...and the shape is square. If you like the brilliance of a RB or Princess, and the shape of an EC...meet in the middle and get a Radiant

I am not looking for a princess or radiant cut. I happened to see those search results and became intrigued. They seem to be big for their carat size. Look at the 3rd link I posted. An emerald cut (what I am looking for) of that carat weight would not be nearly that big, unless it were very, very shallow.

I actually think that third princess IS a bit shallower than is ideal....I'm no expert, but...

...not that I meant in any way to deter you from emerald cuts - they''re my FAVORITE! (obvs.)
