a question for the diamond vendors here

hi!
i want to upgrade my diamond for my new tacori ring. My new jeweler said he could trade in my stone (1.07 RB) for a 1.5 ct RB but was going to charge me almost the full price of what I saw a 1.5 of similar specs costs from various pricescope vendors because he didnt sell me the stone and has a new business. My old jeweler won''t return my emails to see if I can upgrade through them.

do any of the pricescope vendors accept GIA certed stones bought from another source? would you give close to what I paid for the stone towards the larger stone??? Tacori needs the new dimensions if I do change my stone since they have to remake my rings due to the whole cutting the rings off the finger thing.

i really don''t know how it all works but I would love a 1.5 ct RB to look more proportional to my new rings but can''t afford to buy a seperate stone.

To get the most out of your stone, consider selling it on consignment or privately.

Selling directly to a jeweler can be costly.

Don''t expect anywhere near what you paid unless you just happen to find the "right" private.

I would assume every PS dealer would be willing to buy your diamond - the question is for how much. Best thing to do is call around a few places and give as much detail about your diamond as possible. Since the stone has a GIA grading report it''s relatively black and white when it comes to considering value. Typically we will calculate the true "wholesale" value of a diamond, then offer 20% (give or take) below that figure. That might seem mighty low, but several people have found those offers to be considerably more than what local jewelers put on the table.

Consignment might also work, but even then you have to be very aggressive in your pricing or the diamond will just sit. Finding a private buyer is the best idea, but also the most difficult. The local classifieds and ebay are two places to test the waters for private buyers.

Here’s the hard cold facts that the diamond dealers are hesitant to say:
Diamond dealers have regular vendors where they buy their goods and they work very hard to get the best possible prices and service from these people. By buying through the established channels, they get a fair amount of support and varying levels of guarantee that you, as an individual, simply can’t offer. The only reason to buy from you over their other options is price. On the other hand, you paid retail, maybe cheap retail, perhaps not but it’s nearly certain that there were several layers of dealers involved in your purchase. Without knowing what you paid they have to make some guesses based on the fact that they’ve all been asked this question before. They’re guessing high, so am I, and usually the result is that your selling price to dealers will be substantially lower than the price you paid.

In most cities there are diamond buyers who will make you an offer and you will end up with a fairly good feel for what you can expect, at least on the local market. This is often a good question for a professional appraisal and I recommend you start there. It’s a tough business out there and tiny details can make a big difference.

Does the original seller have an upgrade policy ?

It seems that those are the best way to loose the least possible, so if they do accept upgrades, it may be worth insisting (phone ?)

I agree with Neil.
In addition to the fact that dealers will pay a private individual less than they would pay a regular source ( for the reasons Neil outlined) the same holds true when a private individual is offering a diamond for sale.
To a potential buyer, buying from an established dealer allows more safety - actually making the same stone worth more.

If the original seller is interested in keeping your business, they may work with you- many dealers have specific upgrade policies.
Generally a 1.50 would be almost double the price of a like quality one carat- if the original seller was willing tp allow you to trade up.

What are the specifics of the diamond you have?- this will alow us to assess the desirability. Does it have a GIA report?
D-E-F colors in VS+ qualities are obviously strong.

Wow looking at those specs my stone is probably not desirable, although it is beautiful! Iwish they made diamond growing powder...one sprinkle and poof! two carats!!! haha

Its a 1.07 H SI1 round, 58% table, 62.5% depth, no fluorescence or culet, med-sl thick girdle, I dont have pavilion and crown angles (GIA cert). I''ve been trying to contact my old jeweler but they wont email me back, maybe I should call them. I hope they''d be willing to work with me.

There''s been a few statements made here that I disagree with.
First of all, simply having the GIA report in no way makes this a "black and white" question in terms of how dealers might value the diamond.
One diamond with certain stats looks great- another one, less so. This makes one H/SI1 more valuable then another.

The depth on your diamond is slightly high- but it''s likely a great looking stone- after all you picked it once right?


It was also suggested that any of the PS dealers would buy your diamond- here again, I disagree.
Sure, it''s possible someone will be interested in working a trade with you- but that would be the exception, rather than the rule.

Sorry if this is a bitter pill, but it''s simply the realities of the situatiion

David, its not a bitter pill, its exactly what I expected to hear how the system works The depth on my diamond is definitely at the edge of the limits but you are right, it is a beautiful stone.

I contacted my old jeweler by phone per some of your suggestions. He says they do have an upgrade policy and is looking for something similar to my stone and will get back to me. I''m hopeful!
