I''ve been reading more threads lately about how the design of a setting can limit the amount of light that enters which will affect how your diamond "sparkles". I liked how my diamond sparkled in my first setting but, the height my diamond was set bothered me. I can''t stop thinking about the Vatche x-prong and am trying to save up money for it. I will post a pic of my first setting. My first setting also had an exposed girdle where the Vatche is not. Did the exposed girdle also make my diamond sparkle more and would it sparkle less in the Vatche because the girdle is not exposed? I just want to be 100% sure I will like the Vatche. I don''t want to keep on changing my setting.

Thanks in advance.

As far as 'exposure' goes the xprong is pretty open - it lets plenty of light in. Unless your diamond is quite far from well-cut (I went back through your old threads and I don't think this is the case

) it will be beautiful and sparkly in the xprong.

So - yes, a totally open setting like a tension setting will let more light in, and as even superideals don't get all the outputted light from the top, any diamond will be slightly more brilliant in this sort of setting. Theoretically. In reality I don't think you would notice anything, especially without a point of comparison.

ETA: the girdle being exposed is not the issue, sparkle or otherwise

A very common misconception in the jewelry business and by its consumers is that the openess of the mounting will affect the amount of light that is coming in to the diamond. In reality, well over 90 percent of the light that you are seeing coming out of the top of the diamond is going in to the diamond from the top. One of my favorite ways to show this to in house clients is to hold the diamond in a pair of tweezers, then push it down between my closed fingers so that there is no light coming in from the pavilion at all.

There is no perceived difference in the sparkle when this is done.

Having the girdle exposed will not affect the perception of brilliance.
