Well, in my ongoing saga to find the OEC of my dreams, I felt like I needed to see some AVRs in person. It has become apparent that I need to really beautiful cut OEC, 3 plus carats or so, lower in color, to make me happy. I felt like for my education :read: seeing what a "perfectly" cut OEC would look like could help me. I could compare how the OECs I have had the last few weeks compare performance-wise and I could decide if I would go the new cut route rather than the old cut route.

The only ones available right now are 2 carats or less so I ordered the 2.10, M, SI1 and in order to see the color I also ordered a 1.64 N, SI1

I was also interested to see a stone that graduates to a brown tone (2.10 M SI1) since a lot of people seem to prefer that. The 1.64 graduates to yellow.

When I look at the 2.1, I swear I have a hard time seeing brown. I really see a steely color...more gray. It is pretty, but the one that graduates to yellow is brighter IRL. In fact, to me it looks higher in color than the M.

Anyway, here are some pics...I really wish I still had 3.33 M to compare them too for fun. I will say the AVRs are constantly throwing off colors...even light play across (of course you would expect that)...very fiery! The OECs had that unmistakable charm though. I am not really one for quirky in diamonds, but charm is another thing!

This was my attempt to get a picture of the color graduation...left is the brown, right is the yellow

And for fun, I took a picture of 2.1 on the same gold leaf as 3.33 M. The first one is the AVR...second is the OEC. The AVR pattern is CRISP. OEC is adorable...like, hey, I'm old, but I still got it!!!

AMAZING!

My heart still pitter patters for that OEC "M".

Although it's still early, are you leaning more towards one or the other (OEC vs AVR)?

I just feel like I am open to whatever works out. I have the M on hold with Adam so I feel good about that. He is continuing to see if anything comes in that is even more perfect for me. If I go the AVR route Jon would need to locate the rough or a stone for recut AND it would have to be in my price range. I haven't heard back from him on how likely that would be. So, I figured, if the AVR doesn't work out for me at least I know I have seen what a stone with this cut can do. :D

You and diamondseeker should get together in the sunlight today 8-)

I wonder whether the 3.33 could be an AVR candidate ....

Gosh, the 3.33 is such a pretty OEC I wouldn't want to touch it. Not its fault I want a small table. ;) I would rather find a really doggie OEC and recut kwim?

I think her 2.29 I could beat up my 2.10 M. :naughty:

That 3.33 OEC is my favorite in this group for sure. Just gorgeous!

I do ... But with a stone so close to being perfect, I wonder if less tweaking is necessary? Like, buy a wonky four carat, lose half the weight trying to get the right proportions. But if it's already close, maybe you could stay over the three carat mark .....

Hi,

Do you notice much difference in light performance between the large stone you had from Adam and the AVRs? I know that the AVRs are specifically cut for max. optics but I am wondering how the genuine old stone compared? Maybe you should get it back again just to see, I am really curious because I am tossing up between purchasing a genuine old stone and a AVR too, and like you I visually prefer a better cut.

How fun! The only thing I would mention to keep in mind is that Wintotty currently has a 3 ct brown tone K color AVR, I think, and she is hoping to upgrade to closer to 4 cts, so that stone might be available at some point. Not sure whether they are looking for another stone to cut for her or not. But I would think K with the brown wouldn't be as strong a color as M.

How big is the table on the 3 ct stone? I also decided against a stone last fall partly because of color and partly because I wanted a smaller table. I think a pavilion recut would result in less loss of weight if the angles are right to begin with. But I think a crown recut would lose more weight in order to end up with a small table. Of course, the angles would have to be right to do either.

It's funny you should mention that because I remember Wintotty's stone....if it becomes available I would be interested...although now that I think of it a K may be out of my price range.

The table on the M is 52% so I tend to think a recut in order to make a smaller table would result in too much loss of weight/diameter. What would a pavilion recut do? Just sharpen up the facets? hmmm...lots to think about.

I do notice a difference in performance. The AVRs seem to perform well in all lighting environments and the light play is very evenly distributed. I will say the 2.71 OEC I had seemed to have this quality...it was very well cut. The 3.33 OEC I had was very close to this, but I would say that not as many facets were engaged all the time at the same time. On the flip side, the imperfectness of the OECs is very endearing. I think in a perfect world I would like an extremely well cut OEC. But, you have to have the patience or luck to find that. Good luck with your search!!! ;)
