Hi, everyone. My mom has a ring which was very messed up by a jeweler many years ago and she now wants to have it reset into a new ring. It is a prong set wedding band in 14k white gold with 4 quarter carat round diamonds. (Sorry, no pics as she is out of town and I don''t have the ring in my possession.) The prongs were ground down to the bone and one of the stones got chipped from the previous jeweler. The same jeweler "fixed" it twice. She was so unhappy with the job, she just gave up and put the ring away for about 15 years. She even didn''t know about the chip until she recently showed me the ring. She''s not interested in replacing the stone and the ring has no papers. Who is going to take a job like that knowing about a chipped stone? Where are we even going to get such a setting? I''ve seen 3 stone and 5 stone bands, but not 4. Any ideas? Any advice is appreciated! I''m in CT about 90 min from NYC, if that helps at all. She not interested in spending a lot of money, the frugal mom she is. Thanks so much!!!

My advice would be to take the ring to a jeweler that you think you can trust and get some opinions on what options you might have for your Mother''s ring. You could always have a setting custom made. I would imagine that she could sign some kind of waiver to relieve the jeweler of any liability for the chipped diamond.
