The period of elation was immediately followed by massive amounts of self doubt (I just wrote a long detailed message to Icekid) saying, 'Oh my gosh, am I crazy, can I really do this!!!' I got REALLY scared all of a sudden. And then wrote to my friend who was accepted in general surgery about ALL the things I don't know how to do, but should. And he was just as anxious. So I calmed down a bit.

The Program Director told me they have only trained 5 women since the inception of their program. So 50 surgeons, 5 females. And me. The 6th. I guess since they only take 1 Canadian resident a year, it's more likely to be a man just based on interest. But I am really having all of these strange thoughts like 'what if the attendings are all sexist!' Argh. Need to chill have to remember that there are 2 of us in Quebec, and the other one is a female too. If she can do it. I can do it. And that's my mantra for now.

chiquitapet: I don't think it's difficult to get in, as 98% are matched, but I did not cast a wide net, and made many, many mistakes in the process. I am very, very, very lucky it worked out the way it did.

Hey!

Nope, I''m a physical therapy student. Applied for medicine and it was a near miss. Well actually I was accepted in Scotland, but I didn''t want to move when I was 18. Parents didn''t want me to repeat my Leaving Cert (mum''s a doctor, works wayyy too hard

) so did physical therapy as the next best thing, really really enjoying it. Graduating in 6 weeks, plan to work for one year and then consider my next move - stick with this career and specialize, or apply for med school at the age of 25, and take on all that debt, give up my free time...
I''m so on the fence about whether to go for it or not that I usually think I''m just not cut out for it. Maybe not getting in years ago knocked my confidence. But I think it''s one of those things you should always really want to do if you''re going to do it. Anyway, I''m putting all career options out of my head until I get out of college and work for a while.

Oops, that turned into a bit of an essay, sorry!! /end threadjack
