Hello,

I learned that a loose diamond that I ordered came from Hong Kong through BN. This loose diamond has the GIA certificate. I will let the independent appraiser to check it if this loose diamond is real and matches the GIA certificate.

What is the reputation of diamonds from Hong Kong? Please correct me if I misunderstand something. I thought most of diamonds these days come from Africa and other continents.

Thank you,
Abby

That is not the point of origin. It is likely where the cutting facility is located. We see diamonds coming from India on James Allen, too.

if the stone is well cut it dosen't matter where it came from.

It could be where a jewelry retail store is located. BN allows retail stores to list their inventory on BN, and if a BN customer buys the stone, the retailer ships it directly to the customer. Conversely, if someone actually buys the diamond from the B&M store, the store can delist the stone from BN's inventory.

Thank you all for your responses

+1.

What if it came from John Doe's backyard?

Hi

I think the diamond location at that point was Hong kong but it is not mined in Hong kong as Hong kong has no diamond mines.

Since the Diamond has GIA Certificate, you could check the Lazer inscription through 20x loup (if the stone is lazer inscribed)

Hong kong is quiet famous and for Diamonds and I really do not think Blue nile would buy from less known vendor,

however Blue nile does give return policy, it is advisable to get the diamond checked by the Gemologist and if any

problem you could exchange or return it to bluenile.

Diamonds are mostly mined in Russia, Africa, Canada and Australia. They’re mostly cut in India but there are cutting centers all over the world and increasingly in Africa and other Asian countries like China, Vietnam and yes, Hong Kong. GIA has 10 or so labs about the world, including one in Hong Kong.

There’s no scientific test for the location of the mining, cutting or grading of a diamond. Occasionally you get some clues from the paper trail (someone mined it, someone cut it, someone graded it etc. and THEY know where these things occurred. The data exists but it may or may not have made it to you). The GIA report does not list which lab a particular stone was submitted to and, actually, they move them around a bit to even out the work load so it may not have been graded at the same lab where it was submitted.

Does it matter?

For most people, no. Some folks want to support the products of particular countries for political or social reasons. If you love HK, I certainly wouldn't fault you for it, it's an awesome place, but in terms of the product, there's not a difference.
