Hello:
New to your forum and seeking advice on a place to shop (or any other tips) for a ring for my wife as we celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary. Am looking for a 3-stone ring, round/oval stones. I want this to be a nice ring so am using following criteria:
- Cut: VG-G
- Color: E-F
- Clarity: VS2-VS1
- Polish: EX-VG (GIA)
- Symm: VG-G (GIA)
- Depth: 59-64%
- Table: 53-61%
- Flour: None-Faint
- Girdle: Thin-Slightly Thick
- Culet: None-Very Small
- Crown >: 33-36 degrees

Am thinking center stone .75-1.0 w/side stones roughly 1/3 the size of the center stone.
Leaning towards a traditional setting.

Have browsed BN, GOG, James Allen, Nice Ice, Union Diamond, WF, Winfields, Pearlmans to start with.

Would appreciate any recommendations or thoughts you all might have.
Thanks.

check out diamondsonweb.com
I like their website, and maybe they have something for you there.

Welcome and congrats on your 25th!

The criteria used to judge round and oval diamonds is very different. Rounds can be judged reasonably well on the numbers, ovals not so much, they need to be seen to be evaluated.

I would start the search with ASG0 and GIA Excellent cut grades, as this will help you to find some beautiful diamonds far easier, assuming you choose rounds. AGS0 cut grade diamonds are considered to be the creme de la creme for top light performance, GIA excellents aren't created equal so you may want to take each on it's own proportions to weed out the best ones. You can also use the Holloway cut advisor to help you under tools.

If you decide on a 3 stone oval ring, I would recommend you contact Jon at Good old Gold, as he may be able to source and suggest some good ovals for you. Also when diamond hunting, it can be best to stick to vendors who have the diamonds in house, that way they can advise you readily on each diamond's suitability.

Perhaps for your criteria you could consider;

E to G for colour
VS to an eyeclean SI1 if that is an option, unless you prefer VS of course!
depth 60 - 62.6% max ( round diamond)
table 54- 57% ( round)
crown angle 34- 35 deg ( check out combos such as steep for crown and pav angles 35 / 41 and shallow 34/ 40.5 for example to make sure these complement - Idealscope images are useful for this)
pavillion angle- 40.6- 41
polish - Ex and above
symmetry - Ex and above
girdle - thin to med, slightly thick.
fluorescence - has many fans here, it depends on how you feel. Faint you may not even notice, med you may in some lights, if you come across a diamond with strong blue, check with the vendor it doesn't have an adverse effect on the diamond, such as making it look cloudy.

Vendors such as GOG, WF, Pearlmans, JA and Wink all have excellent reps here, whoever you choose, you will be in good hands!

How heart set are you on the VS? MANY many PSers have eyeclean SI1 diamonds. I am asking because this would open up more stones and keep the price down a bit.

BTW: What is your budget?

Every In-House diamond on the PS search is from Blue Nile. Now many people have purchased from them and loved it, but they do not give as much info on the stones as WF, JA, GOG does.

GOG 0.733 ...You would need to call Jonathan and find out what is happening on the edge of this stone. It may be something a prong could get rid of!

ETA: Here is a RB from WhiteFlash 1.00ct

I love looking up at night. I took the pic myself...Maybe the gf will take the new DSLR camera bait!

As usual, Lorelei has given some excellent advice. Rounds are a bit easier to consider by the numbers, and she''s given you some great suggestions for tightening up the numbers.

Only other suggestion I''d make: you might find more selection by going to G in color. An overwhelming majority of people don''t see any visible difference between an F and a G, and dealers tend to have more on hand in G stones because it''s a value point many consumers want.

Thanks for replying and the advice. My eyes may be bigger than my wallet

. I''ll look at dropping a bit in color and rework the #''s.

Not absolutely set on VS. Budget is 5-6K. Thanks for replying anf the advice.

Super! Thanks.

Is this 5-6k for the stones only or including the setting?

What metals are you looking at for the setting? (I ask as platinum is really expensive! Gold has climbed a bit as well.)

Finally, do you have a setting in mind? Have you looked at what is out there?

Ok I will give this a go... (I am no expert like many other people so take this with a grain of salt.)

Setting:

Basic WF 3-Stone $995.00

Center Stone:

0.75 RB I SI1 $2648.00

Side Stones:

0.305 H RB $630.00

.270 H RB $623.00

This comes in a little under budget. I stuck with one vendor for simplicity sake. The only thing I am unsure of is the .30 and .27 side stones. I think the 4.13 vs. 4.37 would be noticeable.

You could always call and see if there are any other stones that they recommend for sides. There is this one from the expert selection, but still has a .1mm difference in width. Those more knowledgeable can chime in...

Good Luck

I was thinking about 5K for stones and 1K for setting, but can flex some either way to get a nice ring. My wife prefers yellow gold to match other jewelry. Settings I see most are somewhat traditional and a trestle type; wife prefers the traditional type. Although we did like the traditional setting with smaller diamonds channel set on sides of the ring. Please forgive me if I''m not using correct terminology. Very much appreciate the advice and suggestions you offered on WF. Definitely peeking my interest.

Congrats on your 25th anniversary

!
You might want to do a search for three stone settings here on PS...I know that there have been a few threads. I will see if I can find some for you, and then you might get some setting ideas.

Thanks, Dana. Great pics! Certainly no shortage of designs

No, there are several designs to chose from! I have one and it is a very basic setting, but I just love looking at some of the trellis and pave ones!

Thanks Alj, that means a lot coming from you!
