I know diamonds that score below 2 indicates excellent quality, but what I didn''t know is not the lower the score the better the diamond. so what''s the best score for a diamond to achieve? 1.5? 0?

The HCA isn''t a tool used to select diamonds, just to exclude them. Most people believe that you should "toss out" any diamonds that score above a 2, but that any diamond with a score under 2 is worth considering. A diamond that gets a 1.5 might not necessarily be better or worse than a diamond that gets a 1.

Right-O. It''s a REJECTION tool.

so a diamond that scores 1 is most likely great in fire and light return, right?

You are correct when you use the term "most likely", though that would apply to any stone that scores 1-2. The HCA is a tool to help narrow down diamond selection so that you don''t have to visually inspect as many stones. The reason for the cut-off at a score of 2 is that the majority of stones that score in this range will have very good light performance.

Say you have 50 stones to choose from. You run them all through HCA and find that 10 score below 2. You have just quickly reduced the time needed to do a physical evaluation by 80%. Now you can do a light evaluation on those ten (Idealscope &/or ASET) before physically examining them to find the one that is "best".

If you did all the same evaluation on the 40 stones you eliminated with HCA, you will find others that would perform as well but not as high a percentage. The difference is that with the HCA, you are increasing your odds greatly.

The reason that the HCA is such a good tool for internet shoppers is that you can narrow down your choices to two or three stones on your own before asking an expert with the company you are buying from to evaluate them. Much better than asking someone you have never met to decide between dozens of stones.

Hope that is a little helpful.

And from what I''ve seen, the a tenth of a degree can send the overall score from under 2.0 to over 2.0. Some dimensions are rounded up or down in the reports...compare the Sarin report to the GIA/AGS report. Sometimes are different by that tenth of a degree.

Hence, I wouldn''t rule out anything up to 2.5, either.

Think of it as Pass/ Fail test.

Exactly. Diamonds which score below 2 are then considered a pass pending further evaluation. This is done with ASET and Idealscope plus trusted vendor or appraiser input. Also some diamonds which score below 2 and 3 with top symmetry can also be worth further evaluation if you have Idealscope or ASET available.
