A great gem and jewelry legend passed away today

So sad. RIP Dame Elizabeth Taylor.

She jokingly once said that she would like her headstone to read "Here lies Elizabeth. She hated being called Liz. But she truly lived".

It's not so well known that Elizabeth Taylor was exceptionally knowledgeable about diamonds and coloured gemstones. If anybody wants to see photos of her truly jaw-dropping collection I would highly recommend her coffee table book "Elizabeth Taylor - My love affair with jewellery". It's fascinating and some of the gems/pieces are simply out of this world.

I just bought it used, very good condition, on Amazon for under $50.

Something strange is going on.
This morning when I first looked for it the price was about $105 for several very good copies that were PAPERBACK!
Then later in the day I looked again and there were several for around $50 HARDCOVER.
I wondered if many owners of the book flooded the market.
Maybe the ones I saw later were what they book industry calls "overstock" with that mark on the side.

I wonder if it is the full sized book or something else explains why it was so cheap.

When my Grandmother was alive, one of our guilty pleasures was watching Elizabeth Taylor chew scenery on the silver screen. I loved her films and her glamour. May she rest quietly and I wish her family good thoughts during this difficult time. Truly a screen goddess.

Was it wrong that when I heard she died my first thought was "What's going to happen to her jewelry?".

I imagine her family will have an auction of her jewelry and a large chunk of the proceeds will go to charity. In her book on jewelry she talks about her jewels going to the corners of the earth after she dies and that she hopes their new caretakers enjoy them as much as she did. She speaks of being the caretaker, not owner of her jewels, and that they will live on after her. I really like that idea, and it is a bot of what motivates me to build my collection.

I think it will be the largest auction to date, and should be incredibly interesting to see.

I wish her family well and hope the afterlife can hold a candle to her life here!

What would make me very happy is if they were donated to a museum, or at least some of them, so that we could all appreciate them. However, I understand that charity would take precedence. I can see all the Saudi Royals lined up to buy her collection.

I totally agree that i would like to see it in a museum, but it sounded like she really thought jewelry should be worn and loved. Not sure if an auction is a guarantee of that, but I guess that method is the best way to try to achieve that.

I may have voiced that thought out loud to DH, which mildly horrified him. I do love her coffeetable book. Some amazing pictures, and great anecdotes about some pieces.

Wouldn't it be cool if they kept her entire jewelry collection together for a few years of museum stops around the world with the admission proceeds going to charity?

Of course the security and insurance costs would be huge.

She was a beautiful lady. My club used to gift wrap for donations at Barnes and Noble around Christmas time and I would always go get her book and look at all her marvelous jewelry. RIP Elizabeth.
