A few Questions

I am searching for a stone to give as an engagement ring and have made a few posting on this site. So far the responses have been very helpful and I am truly appreciative of the advice offered.

It is an intimidating process. I am guarded b/c I do not want to get ripped off, but at the same time I do not want to be overly critical. I have done some research so far so I am familiar with some of the termonology but there are things that I am still not familiar with. For example, what the sarin report or an HCA rating?

My supplier gave me an industry pricing guide the other day and I have been using it as part of my evaluations. Do these types of pricing charts accurately reflect the market? Should I be looking at something else?

A few other questions if anyone has any thoughts:

Girdle: Medium to slightly thick
Is this acceptable or should I try to move to thin to medium range?


Polish and Symmetry
Is there a noticable difference between very good and excellent? The diamond I am looking at is an ideal cut - round brilliant.

The GIA report does not have the culet listed on it - what does this mean?

Clarity: Cloud or feather - which one has a more significant impact on the stone. The clarity rating of the stone is VS1.

The table is 57%
The depth is 61.2
Measurements are 7.35-7.43 x 4.52
Weight 1.50
Flourescence - none
Comments: pinpoints are not shown

Any help would be appreciated. This is uncharted territory for me . . .

You're in luck... we were discussing 1.5ct Rb's in this thread here.

A medium-slightly thick girdle may mean weight that you won't see. The diamond looks to be slightly deep, which is why it's a little bit smaller than a typical 1.5ct.

You won't need that pricing guide if you look at enough stones. You'll get a good feeling for the average prices. Plus, who knows when that book was written.

You'll need more info to make a good guestimate on the stone though. Read the thread above. If you can SEE it personally, even better! Don't discard it yet, it may be a winner. Diamond shopping is all about compromise and timing!

Here is another item that is bothering me. I am using a jeweler who is from another city. We have traded emails and narrowed down specifications on the diamond based on price and the 4 c's. He has been sending me specs on the diamonds over email. Here is the information that he has included in these emails: shape, size, color, clarity, price, report, make, measurements, depth, table, girdle, culet, polish, symmetry, and fluorescence. Should I be requesting anything else?

Is this an exercize in futulity? Why do I say that: it seems like I am able to "knock-out" each of the stones that he sends me b/c I can find a category where they don't quite measure up?

Is this a wise approach or an exercise in futlity? Should I get taking a different tact?

you would probably like him to get the crown and pavillion angles for you. that way you can use the tools here on PS to rule out any poor performers. you can also plug the numbers into the AGA cut chart to see how it rates. If possible, you can also ask them to send a sarin (which will give you all the above info), idealscope images, magnified images of the stone and inclusions. of course, anything else that will make you feel more comfortable. looking at it in person will be the best judge though! good luck!

Maybe you should send him a list of ranges that you want in a stone:


an example would be:


Carat: x - x ctw


Color: G-H


Clarity: VS2 - SI1


Table: 55 - 57,


Depth 59 - 62,


Culet none or pointed,


Girdle: thin - slightly think,


Crown angle 34 - 35,


Pavilion angle 40 - 41,


Cert: AGS or GIA


Symmetry and Polish: VG or EX or Ideal


Budget:




Change the variables to suit your needs, but maybe that will help the vendor get it close to what you want. You also might want to check with a few more vendors. Stocks are tight right now, so you will broaden your options if you talk to more than one supplier.
