Would you run screaming from this diamond? Or is there not enough info (this is from the GIA report)? Is there any way to get crown and pavillion angles if they aren''t listed on the cert?

Thanks Julie! That''s the info I got from the GIA reportcheck. It''s a second hand ring and the diamond was originally graded in... I think... 2001.

The setting is spectacular and highly unusual, and we could only ever afford it second hand. So the next question is, given it''s a signed piece, can the diamond be switched... I''ll start a new thread for that.

That depth is quite high, and the table''s a bit large. Any chance you could find the ring secondhand with a better diamond?

Next to no chance I''d find it with a better diamond... in our price range... and time frame. I''d never seen this setting before AT ALL, never mind second hand.

But I just talked to a friendly neighbourhood pricescope diamond dealer and it seems that switching the diamond could be a plausible, if bank-breaking option. Hey! We can eat rice and beans for a few months...or a year. Or two. I guess.

With a depth like that, I would think the stone would face up much smaller than it should. I wouldn't consider it.

(ETA: a .75 should be in the 5.8mm range, so I guess it's not too terribly off, but it is a little smaller than it should be.)

Does it look good to you in different types of lighting? If it still performed well (maybe check it out with an Idealscope?) and your eyes like it, I would still get it, even if the numbers aren''t ideal.

I doubt bulgari would ever put a real "dud" into one of it's settings. Might not be up to PS standards, but I am sure it's very very good in the scheme of "all diamonds in the world".

Are you the type of person who will be bothered just knowing that their stone is not ideal cut? This wouldn''t bother everyone and some people want the "overall package" instead if this makes any sense.

We put the ring on hold, and we're going to sleep on it this weekend. Then order it and take a look wtih our own eyes.

Where do I get an idealscope? Are they expensive?

I dont know what the budget is, but drop down to a .50 carat ideal Hearts and Arrows diamond with a lifetime upgrade policy. You will not be breaking the bank and you will get a great diamond and if it is too small..... pay it off and upgrade when you can afford too. Dont go broke on your first outing, you do have to eat and pay bills

Also, I see Wink at Winfields has some nice diamonds.

Good Luck

Thanks for the tip, MWG. That was very kind of you to find those stones! I want them all!

With what we''d spend on the ring, we could get a good diamond of a larger size, but part of this ring is the gorgeous and unusual setting which has captured FF''s heart. And now the thing is that we would have to find a diamond with the same dimensions as the one that''s in the setting now, so as not to muck around with it too much.

I think KCour is probably right (as usual!) that I have to think about it as a ''package'' a Bulgari jewel that''s not just ''the diamond'' and not just there to highlight the diamond, but the overall effect of the piece. "The Diamond" can be something I get sometime later in life.

But we''ll see when I see it in person. Maybe it will speak to me. Maybe not!

And I was kind of kidding about the rice and beans! While FF may not be exactly flush after this purchase, I''ve got a healthy savings account to make sure we''re supplied with vegetables and milk too.

And I won''t let him spend more than he has in the bank. No buying luxury items on credit!
