I''d love to hear more about you! I love your friendly disposition, gem collages, and of course your beautiful topaz engagement ring. What do you like to do? Favorite gems or gemstones? Favorite travels?

Goodness, what a surprise!

I''ll be happy to tell you a bit about "the life according to Gailey". It will have to be later on today. I have to go and minister to Baby Gailey who was set-upon in the pub after Superbowl. His finger was badly bitten and I want to make sure he is scrubbing out the wound properly with the idodine brush he was given.

I tell ya, it never rains around here ........

Meanwhile, I''m curious Indy Lady, have you changed your name recently? Did you used to be something unpronounceable with ss''s & zz''s?

So I''ll be back later with the answers to those burning questions:
Maiden name of mother and inside leg measurement
Just how many pies did Mr Gailey eat?
The latest in the gem collection (how did that start again??)

Well gosh, I don''t really know where to start. Where did my love of gemstones start? Well the simple and straightforward answer is that I inherited it from my Mum who had a life long passion for jewellery and in particular emeralds, which incidentally I didn''t care for very much until very recently. But more of Mum''s emeralds later.

There is one other story that stuck in my mind on my gem discovery. When I was a small child - I would guess about 8 or so, my family attended the annual Christmas party thrown by my Godfather. He always held it in his store, a high end jewellry store in Gloucester, UK.

This one particular year, he took me aside and told me that there were really two stars of Bethlehem. Of course I insisted that there weren''t - and I should know, I''d been the girl carrying the official star of Bethlehem on end of a broom pole at the school Nativity play that year. I felt sure I would have noticed if there were two of them. Nevertheless, he insisted and offered to show them to me.

Back we went into his office at the rear of the shop. And with no small degree of trepidation on my part as I recall, because I knew that Uncle Geoff''s office contained a huge safe that he used on party night to house naughty children who mis-behaved at his party. I''d been threatened with it on more than one occasion!

But that night was different. Out of the safe came a red velvet bag, inside a box and inside that, two of the biggest ruby cabochons I have ever seen. They looked to be the size of quails eggs to me back then. They were gorgeous, but no stars. I guess Uncle Geoff held them under a light and told me to look again. Sure enough two of the brightest stars appeared in these stones and I was completely mesmerised. That was it, I was hooked!

Years later Uncle Geoff secured my first full time job in another high end jewellers in Worcester, a town closer to where I lived. Of course, being the junior, and the youngest, I was the one nominated to climb the stairs to the fourth floor on numerous occasions, holding in my hand some truly astonishing diamond and gemstone rings that received a complimentary clean and polish when clients came into the shop. I didn''t ever try them on - honest!

ok missy...that's barely enough to start!

i've settled down with a cup of coffee and am expecting a life story, please!

those ruby cabochons sound unbelievable - what an aladdin's cave of treasures! where in the UK did you live? how is baby gailey's finger? and what about your mother's emeralds? ...to say nothing of the inside leg measurement!!

more please

Hi Gailey! I''m glad that you have your own thread. I''m looking forward to getting to know you better.

Ruby cabachons the size of quail eggs? I can only imagine!

That must have been quite a time to get to see and plays with fine jewels. Do you ever miss England? Can you tell us more about your imperial topaz engagement ring? I love it, and have never meet anyone else with a topaz engagement ring. Do you get a lot of questions, or comments?

Hehe, I did used to be a screenname that was unpronounceable with s''s and z''s. When I joined Pricescope, I intended to ask a quick question and head to hills right after. So, I used the same screenname that I was assigned by my University. Some PS''ers used to even call me Sch! So, I changed my screenname some but kept my avatar the same so that it would be easier to notice.

Well the good news is that Baby Gailey''s finger is doing well and showing no signs of infection. Don''t know that I can say the same about the person who bit him - let''s just say I wouldn''t want to bite him!

There''s quite a lot about me in my Isle of Capri thread. Never mind a cup of coffee - you''ll need a thermos for that one!

To answer Whitby''s question I''m a gal from the Midlands, born in Gloucester and lived for most of my childhood in a small market town in Herefordshire - famous for cattle, cider and hops! My dad had a pathological fear of flying, so we never had foreign holidays, in fact I didn''t get on a plane until I was thirty! I broke my teeth and had measles on wet camping holidays in Weston-super-Mare and Anglesey!

These days, I''m a 5 star gal, or I''ll stay at home. I stare incredulously at people who love to hike and camp. Ironically, I now live in the gateway to the world of hiking and camping and there''s more chance of hell freezing than getting me back into a tent!

I''m working up to the story of Mum''s emeralds, so bear with me.

Meanwhile I''m happy to answer any questions.

you crack me up, gailey! i like you! :)

It took me about 20 minutes to figure out how to post this penguin! Are the penguins in Canada? I do know its pretty darn cold where you live!

Took me a while to master the whole emotie thing, so well done Indy! And thank you! Yes, we do have penguins in Canada, although I''m landlocked in Alberta. We also have moose, bears, polar bears, deer, elk, gophers and a host of other critters! All in all it''s a pretty neat place to live.

Other folk think so too: Economist Intelligence Unit''s Most Liveable Cities Three Canadian cities in the top 5 and Calgary, where I live is at number 5. Some say we are only held back because of our climate. I love the climate. It''s either hot or it''s cold but for 85% of the time the sun shines. Alberta is famous for it''s big blue sky (it really is big). I don''t miss the months and months of grey I used to endure in the UK!

Page me here if you''re looking for geography advice, Gailey!

*damn* ate my post...let me try again:

Just so''s you don''t think I''m talking through my hat: I worked the Aurora/Newmarket/Markham triangle for 4 years. Commuted partways, sometimes stayed over. So I have a pretty good idea of traffic patterns in that part of the world. Also, our monthly trips to Whitby give us a pretty good idea of how well the 407 works..

LS

So Mr Gailey took a drive to Aurora last night, just to see how far it was and how long it took to get there at 5:00pm. He reports 15 minutes and no traffic. Also that it looked really nice.

So Losty, if you had to work in Markham and had decided to live within commutable distance, which neighbourhoods would be on your list to check out?

BTW, have you spoken with Jeff W lately. I happen to know he took delivery of a little gem yesterday which I think you will find really interesting. Tell him Gailey sent you!

Off to work in a minute but I will check in tonight.

Hope you''re having a good day. I hope Marian''s day is better than she was anticipating too.

I just wanted you to know that I "found" your thread, Gailey

I''t not in the drop down menu, so I sometimes forget it exists

Being is need of a good cheering up, I am searching for your thread with Losty about the mangle. That had me roaring the first time I read it. Speak with you later, Gailey and Losty.

a. I wouldn''t work in Markham
3.gif

b. I wouldn''t commute
11.gif
(did that already for 4 years!)

(kidding!)

Aurora is lovely. The ''snowbelt'' starts right about there on Hwy 404 but if you try to not go too far north of town, you should be ok. Down the 404 to Markham is WAY better than Port Perry to Markham...even though Port Perry is idyllic...

I have to stay away from Jeff W....my opal is sitting here on my desk at work (it''s gorgeous by the way) but it needs a home....

Marian:
Here you go. Now don''t go getting all worked up about Mr. Losty''s smalls.....(though I credit Gailey 100% for that phrase!)
