A bit of dilemma: buying diamond and setting separately

Help please! Thank you so much in advance.

I have decided on CBI K 2.02 ct vs2 from HPD. And I have just yesterday decided on the setting to go with - CvB Dahlia thanks to @ceg!

However here comes my dilemma:
I am pretty sure I am okay with the color K, as I have seen it in person, but in the odd case after I spend sometime with it, if I found it to be too warm, I will have 21 days to return it and exchange for something in higher color.

HPD was very gracious, even though I decided not to go with their setting, they said they can ship the diamond to CvB directly insured. But the CvB Dahlia takes 4-5 weeks to make. So by the time, I get the final finished product, I will be way passed the 21 day period. I can see a few options all with pros and cons:

1) get a very inexpensive setting for the diamond and spend some time with it. Once I know I am fine with the diamond, order the CvB Dahlia, ship the diamond to CvB myself. The problem with this option is I will end up with a setting that is pretty much useless afterwards.

2) Just take my chance with the diamond color, and let HPD ship the diamond to CvB and essentially forfeit the 21 day return period.

3) Supposedly the 21 day starts once the receiver sign the the receiving of the product. I wonder if I can ask HPD not to ship the diamond until CvB is at the final stage of putting the ring together. In that way, once I received the ring with the diamond, I might still have a few days left.

Any suggestion? What do people who buys diamond and setting separately do? Thank you in advance.

8DA595E0-CECA-4545-B406-FF6234BA0D18.jpeg Hi, you could buy a temporary gem holder ring. These aren’t for wearing, or actually using, they are for holding the gem so you can “put it on your finger” to see what it looks like.
They are very cheap. You would then just get the diamond sent to you and after you give it a twirl in the ring setting, inside, outside, daytime, nighttime you can see if it suits.
If you don’t like it, return in the 21 days otherwise send it off to be set.

Talk to Caysie to be sure what her production time is and explain your situation. I would also see if HPD has an inexpensive setting to use as a temp setting. It may cost a few hundred but then you can wear it to be sure you like the color, and it makes the wait sooooo much easier!

#3 - If you don’t care for the colour you’ll be stuck finding a replacement stone with the same dimensions, which will greatly limit your options. Strongly recommend against this.

#2 - Winds up being exactly the same situation as #3 if you don’t like the stone - you now have a setting to find a stone for.

#1 - You’ve already seen the stone... how much quality time have you spent with it? Have you seen how it behaves in low light indoors? In sunlight? On a cloudy day?

I do recommend this route, if you’re okay with being out a couple hundred at the end of it. Alternatively, just have the stone shipped to you unset and play with it loose for a couple of weeks as @Bron357 suggested. There’s really no rush to have it set!! Caysie will be able to send you an insured label when you’re ready, so you have nothing to lose by taking two weeks to confirm this stone is right for you.

The option @Bron357 posted above is great for this scenario; I have a couple of them and they’re perfect for this exact scenario because it lets you ‘test drive’ the stone on your finger in various light settings to decide if you like it or not, but obviously some care/caution is still required because it is not as secure as a normal ring setting. You might ask Wink if he can ship one with your diamond. I think they cost something like $5.

Definitely do not have Caysie set it until you have spent time with it in different environments to get to know the "K" color of your diamond. Get to know this diamond before you make an irrevocable decision. I would go the route of an inexpensive setting that HPD can provide for you because that is the easiest thing to do. I ike the idea of it being set so you can take it all around without fear of the diamond falling out and really examine it and wear it in all environments vs the ring holder. For a couple of hundred dollars it gives you peace of mind before you get your permanent setting for your permanent diamond. Good luck!

Agree with the route @missy suggests.
It would be such a pity if Caysie creates the ring for this while you might end up with a different stone. That new stone could have different dimensions with could make the setting useless.

I believe one of these will actually come with the diamond.

What @missy suggested. Not too long ago, I upgraded to a J color diamond that seemed to be everything I wanted, but once I got to play round with it, I was not happy with an inclusion that I could easily spot. I ended up exchanging it and I am super happy that I didn’t have a custom setting created for it. The next diamond I upgraded to I also had in my possession for months before I eventually set it. Caysie also did my setting and the custom process may take longer than a few weeks. I just sent her my stones when she was ready to set them.
Btw Caysie can send you an insured FedEx label. I personally found the cost of the label to be absolutely worth the peace of mind.
