I have a stone that I'm hoping to find a pre-made setting for. I think my best bet is something made for a square stone as this doesn't seem elongated enough for an emerald cut setting (although I could be wrong on that!). What do you think? Is this too far out of square?

If your diamond is to be set in a four prong head, It may well be that your jeweler can adjust the prongs to securely hold the slightly elongated shape of this gem. This would, of course, need to be answered by your jeweler's benchman or benchwoman. Your measurements are a 1.06 to 1 length to width ratio, so I suspect that it can be done, but you will want to confirm with your jeweler prior to ordering the mounting.

Hi Wink! Thanks for the good advice. I suspected that was the case... Since this is an inexpensive stone (actually a grey spinel, not a diamond, but this seemed like the best forum to post the question) I am hoping to avoid the expensive custom route.

#DeeCanNeverDoAnythingOnTheCheap

Most 4 prong settings will work with it.
Just remember the measurements on the report are across the flats not the corners for a se/ec
The actual size will vary based on the size of the corners with the same flat measurement.

woops see it was not a diamond but more likely it was measured across the flats.

One of the most elegant gentleman's rings I ever made was with an incredible steel gray spinel. Had the gem been a bright blue or brilliant red it would have been WAY more expensive, but no more elegant than the almost understated steel gray.

Thanks Stormy -- that's a good point about the corners.

Wink, here is the stone. I love steely blue gray spinel, and that's what I started looking for, but then this darker one with the more purple tone just spoke to me. The good news is nothing says I can't have more than one!

The depth of gemstones make pre-mades tough and Stuller is sometimes just as expensive as custom!!

Ahhhhhh... another good point. I'm starting to feel an email to David Klass coming on!

Have you worked with Dan M before? Super reasonable price points. For a simpler setting he’s my go-to.

Beautiful Dee Jay. I like the purple in your gray.
