.75 carat weight measures .65 in mm

Perhaps it was my ignorance 11 years ago, but, I was sold a .75 carat diamond from a friend of my husband. He runs a legitimate jewelry store in my hometown. I was experienced enough to ask about the clarity and color (sold as a K and I cannot remember the clarity - eye clean). A month ago I took the ring to another jeweler to get an estimate on re-mounting the diamond. When she measured the stone, she said it was 5.5/5.6 mm which, after reading here, is the equivalent of a .65 stone.

Is it possible that a .75 carat weight stone could be cut so poorly that it only measures as a .65? After doing a lot of research on this site, I'm under the impression that a poorly cut stone could weigh more and measure less but the poor cut would be very obvious. Honestly this stone is very pretty, lots of sparkle and fire (but, maybe I'm biased?). I realize I could go to a jewler and compare the size of my diamond to a "verified" .75 but I hate to go to jewelry stores and ask these things when I know I'm not planning to buy from them. I'm too cheap to buy an appraisal right now and I don't want to waste their time (plus I don't want to hear a sales pitch). BTW, size 4.5 finger.

It happens all the time and that is why we tell people here shopping for diamonds to always look at the diameter measurement. Stones that are cut too deep will face up smaller than a well cut stone. It is best to find stones that are no more than 62% in depth (or 62.3). Stick with GIA Excellent cut for future purchases and watch the depth and diameter.

Don't feel bad because many of us here made prior purchases of less than well cut diamonds before we found PriceScope.

Thanks for responding. Yes, very glad to have found this site. Like others before me, wish I had known all of this 11 years ago. I guess even a poorly cut diamond will still sparkle and shine!

To the untrained eye, it sparkles and shines but once you've seen a well cut diamond, you'll be surprised to see the difference at how much more sparkly a well cut diamond is. Don't feel bad as I've had my share of shallow / deep diamonds pre-Pricescope days.

Can anyone tell, just by looking at the photos, whether or not this seems to be a poorly cut diamond?

I wonder if it might be a good candidate for recutting. Sure you would lose some CTW but they may be able to cut it to keep a lot of the face up size. It would be less expensive than trading in or getting a new one. Plus, you could send it to Brian gavin or good old gold and maybe while its there it gets reset in a fancy new solitaire or three stone


It would have to be reviewed to see if its a good candidate though.
