I have a .48 round brilliant D, IF stone that has been in a plain solitaire setting for 10 years. My hubby went for quality over size. I have loved it but was ready for a bit more bling. Found this setting that I love for a reasonable price. The head is designed for a ct stone but they laid in a .6 stone to get an idea of size. They are going to order a new head designed to fit my stone and one of the ladies suggested a 6 prong because it can make a round look rounder and bigger and it would be more secure. Sounded great to me last night, but looking back at pics of the ring, now I’m not sure. I like the way it looks from the side and I don’t know if 6 prongs would change the overall appearance of it. Thoughts?

I like the way 4 prongs look with that setting...just my 2 cents.

4 prongs for sure. especially for a smaller stone size, i think 6 prongs can be overwhelming.

4 prongs, but may sure they refine them as much as possible. I'd favor claw prongs. Look at rings by David Klass (instagram), Leon Mege and Victor Canera. Bring photos to show how you want the prongs to look (just bear in mind that on a bigger stone this will look proportionally smaller). So, try to find examples of similar sized stones.

Edited to add: tons of pages of examples under 1 carat to look at prongs.

As long as your prongs are delicate and proportional to the stone I think you could do either 4 or 6 prong successfully. For a round stone I prefer 6 prongs to 4 to make the stone look more round as opposed to squarish. But some prefer a more cushion like shape to their round so then 4 works well. As long as the prong work is good either option would work well IMO.

Thank you so much! Such good ideas. I love claw settings. They are ordering just a regular head I think. But I’m sure I can make changes at this point. This is a decent chain type jeweler not a custom place so I don’t know how fancy we can get with some of the heads.

I really like our choice, the ribbon-style setting is very pretty. I also think that six *well done and delicate* prongs are a nice option for a round stone. It makes the stone look larger and rounder, while also being extra- safe.
Also, if your jeweler can order from stuller, they can order any of their heads. Obviously including the ones in the links from ccuheartnurse.
The only thing you need to watch out for is their prongwork. Shoddy prongwork can ruin any ring and especially daintier rings suffer most from bulky prongs.

I love love love the ribbon ring setting and would stick with four prongs to keep the prongs aligned with the "ribbons"... Agree on the claw prong suggestion or Tiffany style delicate tab prongs

This is my main concern with going with 6 prongs. I think the diamond would look lovely in 6 prongs, but worry that it won't look as good on this setting as they won't be aligned with the ribbons. Never thought I would go with a setting like this but when I tried it on, it just seemed perfect :-)

Do you think the 6 would be ok with the ribbons?

I personally would still prefer 6 very very delicate prongs ( added at 12 and 6 o'clock, the other prongs adjusted accordingly and aligned with the ribbons). Since the ribbons are round there's no hard edge and you have some play imho.
This is because I really prefer the rounded look and am not a fan of a sqarish appearance. And since I damaged my peg head in a fairly every day manoeuvre (seat belt), I like the extra safety.
Your aesthetic preferences and security concerns may vary though.

If in doubt about their ability to do nice prongs, I'd pass on the 6 prongs , however.

Thanks everyone! I went back and got a few more people’s opinions and we decided to go with the 4 prong. Thanks for all the input - it helped a lot. Can’t wait to get it!

I picked my rings up yesterday and I love them. So glad I went with the four prong. I think it shows off my pretty .48ct stone very nicely!

Looks great on you! Congrats!

Your ring looks wonderful! I have to agree that for a smaller stone 6 prongs can get overwhelming pretty quickly, you want to see stone...not metal prongs when looking at your beauty.
