Alright, so I’m the insane one who bought 6 different ovals to compare. Here’s the breakdown
Ruby Harper
3.08 E VVS2 $857
https://loupe360.com/diamond/ LG646480963
- This one is beautiful, 1.4 ratio is a little too chubby from what I realized I like. Bowtie is also a little more prominent than the 3.06
3.06 G VS1 $971
https://loupe360.com/diamond/ 7466163787
- My current favorite! Something about this has stolen my heart. Somehow faces up as big as the 3.27 below. But I’m worried I want to go bigger… If I were to stay at this carat size, this is the one.
3.32 F VS1 $811
https://loupe360.com/diamond/LG579369312
- This one is gorgeous, second (or first?) favorite but the bowtie seems much more noticeable than the 3.06… I can’t tell if this is just because it’s a bigger stone, or a worse bowtie or both. Light return seems great. I think this is the sweet spot of the size I’d like, maaaybe I’d go to 3.5.
How is the bowtie/light return on this?
Calavera New York

3.27 F VVS2 - $687

- Something about this one seems a little hazy when right next to the other ones, but for the price this one is a STEAL. Light performance is probably the worst out of all of them, but to be honest I don’t think you’d be able to objectively tell on its own as it’s still a stunner. Great stone, but the bowtie is also just too noticeable for me. There’s also a dead spot at the top of the stone with some light leakage. I don’t think the average person would notice. Also loved the bigger size of this compared to the 3.16 that arrived at the same time as it.

- This one unfortunately has yet to show up… I’m a bit worried it’s lost/stolen, waiting another few days before I can report to USPS
3.16 G VVS1 $1259
https://loupe360.com/diamond/LG617424975
- This one unfortunately is too chubby for my liking, but it’s gorgeous. Seemingly great light return, minimal bowtie.

What I’ve learned:
- Either I’m a pro at picking good light return ovals from 360s and bought a great batch, or just terrible at taking ASETs as all of the ASETs look generally the same (seemingly good quality, would love for opinions on this though) except for the 3.27, which has a bit worse of a light return. Objectively, it’s very hard to tell the difference between sparkle in person between these stones. I’ll say except for the 3.27 again, but even then it’s extremely difficult.
- I was super curious if the $$$ on the stone mattered for the quality, but the only notable price difference I could objectively tell when doing a blind comparison test was the 3.27 because of the dead light spot and worse bowtie, otherwise I’d have no idea that the $1259 was more expensive than the $811 for example. I’d say spending more doesn’t mean you’ll necessarily get something better.
- 1.45 - 1.5 is my favorite ratio
- It’s SO hard to tell what the bowtie is going to be from the 360.
- The size difference from just a slight 3.16 and 3.27 is so crazy different, especially depending on the ratio. The smallest one I got 3.06 seems just as big as the 3.27, so evaluating the mm dimensions is definitely a good tip. Ratio plays into this a lot as well.
Things I still have to decide:
- Whether I want to go bigger (Either keep the 3.32 and deal with the bowtie, or return all and do a new order ), or stick with the smaller size 3.06 G because I love it.
What I want to know/advice please!
- Does the bowtie on the 3.32 look reasonably minimal or could I do better?
- Do these ASETs look generally good? Is there one that stands out? To me, it seems like they’re generally good performers, but I’d love other opinions. I debated just ordering one of whiteflashes preselected ovals that have brilliance/ASETs, etc. but the price differential seemed crazy and I thought I could do the science experiment on my own, so I’m curious if I should stay on the hunt for better ASET performance or if people here think I generally got some good preforming ovals in this batch and that’s why the ASETs all seemed similar.
