Hi all,

I have been looking at getting a 5 stone ring to wear on my right hand for ages already, and think now is the time to finally do it.

I have absolutely no idea how/where/what to start the process however, and really need guidance, please!

I have a size 4.5 finger, and am thinking of getting five .40 pointers each, for a total of 2 carat weight. I like big bling! Looking to get the ring in a platinum U prong setting by Brian Gavin. I have been given quotes for his Black by Brian Gavin Diamonds, and also was told that I can opt to get the 5 stones to be custom cut by Brian himself, as well? Can someone please let me know if it would be worth to do this?

In addition, being that my hand is on the smaller side, I think that 2 carats is the maximum that I can wear, should I ask for the ends to be tapered in a bit, so not to bump into my other fingers? The specs that I have been quoted for are G-H in colour, excellent cut, and VS1-VS2 in clarity. Is there a need to go any higher in the colour category? Can I ask that each of the 5 stones have an HCA score less than 1?

So many questions, and don't know where to start!

Thank you.

Hi there! You are already ahead of so many people by looking at super-ideal vendors so there is really no need for so much concern:)

Ok, just to address some of your questions;
- 40pt each is probably the max you should be going. You ring size is pretty small, but you may be able to pull off a 2ctw 5 stone ring. My best advice would be to please try some on locally before you commit to the purchase
- BGDs u-prong setting is beautiful and they make it very comfy. The stock option is also returnable if you don’t like it. Any modifications will make it a final sale.
- I don’t think that you need to go higher on color. What color are the other diamonds on your jewelry box?
- you definitely don’t need to have Brian cut the stones. He is a master cutter and I have great respect for him, but the cutters that he works with are also very good. All diamonds that they sell meet their strict requirements for their signature lines.
- You are looking at super ideal stones, you do not need to folllow HCA and you definitely don’t need a score of less than one. With HCA, anything under 2 is a pass, anything above 2 is a fail. 1 is not better than 2. Generally, AGS trumps HCA. You are looking at AGS super ideal stones, please ignore HCA.

Here is another BGD Black band which was recently completed for a fellow PSer. She has a similar ring size to yours and the band is stunning:

Thank you, SimoneDi... feeling a little bit less stressed!!!

The other stones that I have are D-F in colour, but they are solitaires, and bigger in size. I am thinking for .40 pointers, I can be more flexible and go down to a G to try and keep the price down.

I love the uprong setting, but I wonder if it's too low profile and "flat"? If so, are there any other 5 prong settings which are slightly higher?

I will ignore the HCA score then, as not necessary? And do you think it would be worth having Brian Gavin taper in the stones at the end? I visited the diamond district where I live, and it was very hard to find a 5 stone ring, much less one that was 2 carats in total. I don't know, perhaps this style isn't so popular in Europe?!

Do you think that there's anything else that I need to consider when making this purchase?

Thank you again!!

I don't think you really want a higher setting (i.e., the stones higher off the finger), maybe you want something where the stones are not all at the same elevation? You can have the stone set more in a stair-step pattern. Example below, not rounds, but gives the idea.

The company BG can have stones custom cut. Brian does not personally do it. I had them recut a stone for me. It gets sent out of the country to the cutters of their hearts and arrows stones and it takes a few weeks. There is zero reason to have stones custom cut unless they have no stones the right size and cannot get any in within the next few months. But that normally would not be the case as they can usually access what you need in a few weeks if it's not in stock.

If you wear a 4.5, your stones will be wider than the top of your finger and the stones might be uncomfortable next to your other fingers. Here is a band of five 40 pointers on a size 5.5 finger.
