I need help making a decision on the right carat weight vs color for my fiance's 5-stone shared prong platinum wedding band! The choices are:

1.25 ctw Ideal (GIA) G-VS2 stones (these are about 4.11mm diameter each) vs.

1.62 ctw Ideal (AGSL) I-VS2 stones (these are about 4.4mm diameter each) + $130.

Her ring size is 6.25.

What would you choose and why? How about coverage? Thanks so much :)

I've read through most of the threads on 5-stone rings and have seen all your rings, very beautiful.

Will she be wearing this with an engagement ring? or seperately?

hi joe - welcome!

1.25ctw is a large wedding ring, and 1.62ctw is a massive ring to have as a wedding ring. what is her engagement ring like? this is the key, as they have to sit in proportion to each other.

my rule of thumb is to have the ''seen'' ctw of the wedding ring (that being the stones on the top of her finger which you see, as opposed to any stones which may run around the back of her finger) no more than half the weight of her engagement ring. if you go past that, the upwards-facing surface area of the stones in the wedder become so much greater than the upwards-facing surface area of the e-ring, that it overwhelms it and makes it look secondary. since traditionally the e-ring is meant to be ''the big ring'', this isn''t a good way forward.

so...so long as your e-ring is in the 2.5ct range, 1.25ctw for the wedding ring should be fine. otherwise, if you want the 1.62ctw ring, i''d be thinking that her e-ring needs to be 3ct +.

having said all that - some ladies here are happy for their wedders to show greater diamond surface area than their e-rings. that''s just not to my taste and i always think it looks out of balance when the e-ring is a small dot above a large plain of wedding band diamond surface area.

but it''s horses for courses....

Thanks for the replies. She would be wearing this on the opposite hand of her engagement ring, so it would be seperate.

She has a 3-side pave engagement ring with a 1.5 carat center diamond: https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/e-ring-collaboration-whiteflash-jamesallen.85564/

Looks like I put this thread in the wrong section

aaaahhhh!

well, if you''re going for a different hand...

i''d still go for the 1.25ctw band. even on different hands, it''s nice if her engagement ring still looks like the most substantial ring. and 5 x .25ct stones is still a very substantial wedding ring! there''s a lot of them here on PS, as you''ve probably seen, and they look fabbo!

Well....either size would be quite substantial! however, having said that and since this isn't my money we're spending I would get the bigger size ctw - i am really basing this on the fact that Kcoursolle, the many others that followed with her five stone, and the stock option that it inspired at WF is a 1.5, with each stone weighing in at 30 points. I love the way it looks on the hand. I think it would make her swoon!

Let me go see if i can find the link for you. BRB.

EDIT: here you go - should give pics on the hand too for size - L

VE it! p.s. she's a 4.5 size finger, and it still looks perfect on her - it would look awesome on a 6.5!

Either ring will be fairly large on her finger size, I have a .75ct on a size 8.5 and it looks very nice indeed

that size would be amazing

Thanks again for the responses. I think I will pull the trigger on the 1.62 ctw I-VS2 set of stones tomorrow

. I don''t think it will be too big on her 6.25 ring size finger and my only other concern was the I color; however, in small stones that are AGSL Ideal, I hope the slight color won''t be noticeable.

I have a ring which is a five stone just slightly larger then your second option but my hand size is the same. I dont think the 1.25 will be big enough to cover from one side of her finger to the other.

What a gorgeous set!

I''d say go for the bigger one

JMHO, but I would go for the 1.25. I wear my 5 stone 1ctw on my right hand as well and am a 6-6.25. I debated between the 1 ctw and 1.5 ctw, and, as much as I loved the larger stones, I thought it was just too much. The 1 ctw really complements my wedding set with is a 1.73 center set with 10 pointers...

Thanks for all the input and lovely photos.

I just ordered the ring last night and ended up buying 1.55 ctw Ideal (AGSL) H-SI1 stones (each stone is 0.31 carat). I''ll receive the ring next week and will definitely post pictures

Joe, that one should be just right. I have 1.51 cts on a size 6.25 ring (but size 6 finger) and I feel I maxxed out my finger width in diamonds. In fact mine is a tiny bit wider than my finger width.

Sigh. I''m thinking I want something just this size. I wear a size 6 and 1.50 carats over 5 stones sounds just right. Gemgirl, your ring is beautiful!

Sounds perfect, she is going to love it

it looks like there is some under the table leakage in the center stone on the last pic; however, IRL it is not visible. They are all AGS0 H SI1.

looks beautiful!
